'reputed'????
« on: Sunday 07 February 10 14:51 GMT (UK) »
I have just been going over some OLD PAROCHIAL RECORDS of my ancestors and the word "reputed" is used in two of them.  Does anyone know the exact definition of the word as it is used here?

Does this always occur for "Father" or is it somewhere else ?

If it is "Father" then it is probably the usual definition of reputed, i.e. believed to be

Hello Bob...yes, it does come directly after the names of fathers.  It is interesting that  the children in the two cases - one is male and one is female -  and only in the case of the female, is she listed as illegitimate on both her marriage and death certificates...not the case for the male.
Thank you for responding, Bob.
Regards,
Patricia

It is interesting that  the children in the two cases - one is male and one is female -  and only in the case of the female, is she listed as illegitimate on both her marriage and death certificates...not the case for the male.
Remember that the information on the marriage certificate is as provided by the couple getting married, and that on the death certificate by someone else.

It may be that the female was well known to everyone including the registrar where she lived and married, in which case the registrar would have known she was illegitimate, or maybe she just told the truth.

Perhaps the male managed to fudge the issue - maybe he got married in a parish where his parentage was not known, and he was able to get away with the pretence that his parents were married. Or perhaps they did marry after he was born, in which case he would have been legitimised.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
