Looks as if the HEDGES liked to get their children baptised when they came hopping/fruit picking in Kent - lots of September christenings.

Have you tried the HEDGES Rootsweb mailing list (especially this post)?

Hi Bearkat

Nice to see you :)

Thanks for all the links ....they are great. :)

Geez ..... I think the missing 1851 holds all the clues ....typical!

I am trying to figure out Joseph , chairbottomer in prison in 1841 (remember ages rounded up or down , can't remember which way  :-\)

also who is Elizabeth in 1841 with son John living with Thomas and Eden?

Oh gosh, that link just confuses us even more!  Those Hedges are of Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire... places we've not really looked into yet!  And apparently they're of the travelling community as well.

This just gets harder with every new bit of information!  Perhaps if we start looking in Cambridgeshire, we could somehow make a link?

Of course, the link between all these families could be in the 18ths century or even earlier.  I have no history of the travelling community but don't just suppose they turned up in the middle of the 19th century, so when did all these families start to live like this?  It also seems many later brancehs settled down and became labourers or.

I have the 3 brothers who were in prison in 1841 so do we have any other info on them at all?

Do we know if they married? Also what have we got for Joseph and Elizabeth, marriage etc :)

Thought id look into these as im stuck again ;D ;D

Sorry for asking im just lost ::)   Where is Deb when you need her ;D ;D ;D

  Sue

All we know of Joseph is he is listed as 20 according to the 1841 census he would have been born in 1821
(which is the same year as Job HEDGES who he may be brother to.)
As for Elizabeth it is the same, we have an entry on the 1841 census where she is living with Thomas she is 30 so will be born 1811.
As Deb reminded me they rounded ages of all those of adult age. I think (correct me if I'm wrong) they rounded up/down to the nearest 10.
Having said that I am looking at the originals and It looks like they are rounding to the nearest 5 as they have entries of age 25 and 35 etc.
Blimey how are you supposed to work out how old they were. Why couldn't they just put their correct ages down. Grrrrrrrr.
I hate numbers, it's no wonder I get lost.

I believe they round up for those over the age of 14.  So anyone aged less than 14, should in theory, have the correct age.

I've seen many ages recorded correctly on the 1841 census in my time though.  In fact, I've not come across rounded up entries as much as I thought I would.

The entry you speak of, however, does indeed look like it is rounded up in some way.  Very confusing!
