The FERRIEs in America
« on: Friday 18 March 05 11:14 GMT (UK) »
Searching, as always, for Hessies, I found Hessie FERRIE's grandfather, John FERRIE in Scotland in 1881
(Errm ... credit where credit is due: it was actually winston who found them !
Thanks again, winston !)

these are the details for the FERRIE Family in Scotland in 1881:

Mary  Ferrie  Head  Female 47  (1834) England
John  Ferrie  Son  Male  23  (1858) United States  Labourer, Boilermaker
Richard  Ferrie  Son  Male  21  (1860) United States  Labourer, Boilermaker
Theresa  Ferrie  Daur  Female 20  (1861) United States  Laundress

Between 1858 and 1861 the family was obviously still in the states.

I'm afraid that's all I know about them. Can anyone else find anything about them in America for me, please ?

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Hi, Bob

I think I may have found your Ferries. In the 1860 US census index they were listed as Ferrey
1860 US Census, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia County, Philadelphia (city), 15th Ward
Ferrey, John, age 26 b. Scotland, Occupation: Iron Moulder
           Mary, age 27, b. England
            John, age 3, b. Pennsylvania
           Richard, age 1, b. Pennsylvania

Hope this helps.

Yupp !! I think that's them !!

That is wonderfull,  thank you very much, Debbie.

It seems that the son John followed in his father's profession: iron driller (1891 and 1901 census) and Iron moulder, on his son's wedding cert (Robert Ferrie)

Now at last I know the fathers's name and can go back to looking in Scotland again. Legend has it, that the family came from the Isle of Islay.

I wonder when and how they came back to Scotland ??

Once again, thank you.

After a sleepness night ( NO, not because of the FERRIEs, I do have other problems, you know !) I thought of some more questions:

PRE 1860:

Mary was Mary HARLY

- did John and Mary meet and marry in the States or in Britain ?
- when did they come to the States ?

Sometime between 1861 and 1881:

- John FERRIE died - when ?
- The family moved back to Scotland - when ?

Can anybody "see" them in  America on the 1870 census ???

Can anybody see anything else about them, anywhere ???

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Jennifer,

thank you for that information.  If one of them is "mine" then it looks like he wasn't intending to return to Britain.

Maybe when he died, his widow decided she wanted to go home ??
But then, why Scotland and not England ??

We never run run out of questions here, do we !

Thanks again,
Bob
