Carter family in Jersey
« on: Tuesday 09 February 10 16:51 GMT (UK) »
Harriet Carter was my g g grandmother and she is on the 1851 census in Jersey.

Back of Aquila Road 2, St Helier
Charles Carter   head      39        out pensioner          Norfolk
Mary Carter      wife       37                                        Norfolk
Hariet Carter     dau        12         scholar                    St Helier
??      Carter       son        10m                                     St Helier

I cannot find any of them on the 1841 census. There is another Harriet of similar age with a John and Eliza but they are also on the 1851.

I know that Charles Carter was born in Diss, Norfolk in1813. As a private in the 46th Regiment of Infantry he arrived Fort Regent from Plymouth in August 1839 and left Jersey in June 1841. He went to Ireland, Gibraltar, West Indies and N. America before returning to England in 1848 and was invalided out of the army to pension in January 1849. He is in Jersey in 1851 (see above) and dies in the workhouse in Westminster in April 1858.
Harriet Carter married Henry Ward in Westminster in 1860 and they remained in  London.

I don’t know
Mary’s maiden name.
Whether they married in England or Jersey or at all.
Whether she was really from Norfolk or possibly Jersey.
What happened to her.
Birth or christening details for Harriet.
Name, birth or christening details for her brother.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Derek

There are too many letters in the name for it to be Esther and it is supposed to be a male.

Harriet daughter of John and Eliza is on both 1841 and 1851 so must be a different family.
