My G-G-Grandfather is George OKane.....married to Mary Gilmour.

My G-Grandmother is Catherine OKane, born in Garvagh ~1865........she immigrated to US and settled in Boston area where she married Daniel McGonigle.......many siblings including Rose (b. 1867), Mary (1868), Henry (1870), Alice (1871), Henry John (1873), Sarah (1875), Charles (1877), George (1881).

Just found this space and I'm intrigued by possible links. My Great Grandfather was John O'Kane born 1834 died 1908. He was married to Mary O'Kane (1842-1918). They had five sons: Daniel, James, Henry, Barney, Patrick (my grandfather) and John. The address I have for John and Mary was Legavallen, Brockaboy, Garvagh.
Can anyone see how this might fit into their family tree?

Hi Gerry,

John O'Kane's father was Harry Roe O'Kane...a brother of my great grandfather Daniel O'Kane. It's possible that Mary O'Kane was the daughter of another brother, James. John and Mary were cousins but I'm not sure if they could have married if they were 1st cousins.

John and Mary had Henry,James,Bridget,Charles,John,Patrick,Catherine,Mary,Bernard,Daniel and Grace.

Henry 1865 married Catherine Mooney.They had at least 2 children,Mary 1896 and John 1900.

I can't send you a pm as you don't have enough posts yet...you might be able to send your email address to me

Regards,

Mary

Wow thanks for all this. I didn't have any records of the girls in the family or of Charles. I have a family photograph of the sons and John but no Charles...
I know that two of John's sons went to America where one was never heard of again, but I don't have any other details. I have seen this 'harry roe' o'kane mentioned several times. How did he get from Harry Roe to O'Kane?

Hi Gerry,

Because there are so many O'Kane families in the area a lot of them had nicknames to distinguish them. Roe isn't a surname but a nickname for our O'Kane's. Roe is from "rua" the Irish for red...in this case redhaired. We had a lot of redheads in our family!
