Wintby....is there such a place?
« on: Friday 18 March 05 12:25 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I am new to this board, and to genealogy as well.

Using the 1901 Census data, I have managed to trace my great-grandmother, Mary A Foster, born in (about) 1848, in Wintby, Yorks.

Is there such a place?  Could it be a typo, and be Whitby instead?
If it is Wintby, where do I go to find parish records?
Foster is her married name...how would I go about finding her maiden name?

Sorry if these are dumb questions!
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi gmf

I am not aware of a place called Wintby.  I imagine it refers to Whitby.  In fact I initially misread your posting as "Whitby....is there such a place?" which shows it must look similar (or maybe its just me!  ;D)

Best wishes

Hi Ticker
Many thanks for your response.
I googled the name Wintby and only found one URL:
http://www.citimall.com/train/preservation_and_hobbies/north_yorkshire_railway.htm

There is mention of Wintby and Whitby in the same sentence:
*At Grosmont the line connects with the mainline from Wintby to Middlesborough. The locomotive shed is also at Grosmont, where a splendid signal box was built in 1996 using original bricks from a similar 19th-century signal box at nearby Whitby.*

I have emailed the North Yorkshire Moors railway website to seek clarification – this could be a typo, but maybe Wintby died out, or was swallowed up by another village?

If Wintby did exist, how would I locate old parish records?

Thanks
Gaynor

Hi Gaynor

I'm pretty sure the article on the railway is referring to Whitby.

I agree with Sharon about the 1881 reference.  Was she married to Miles Foster?  If so I've found her in 1881 and she was born in Whitby.

Best wishes

Hi Sharon and Ticker
Thanks so much, found Mary Ann as you suggested, in the 1881 Census, and yes, born in Whitby.
