1851 Census Look request - George Atkinson Completed
« on: Wednesday 10 February 10 14:31 GMT (UK) »
Looking for the details in the 1851 Census for George Atkinson born 1797 in Yeavering near Wooler. By 1851 he would be about 54 years of age. His wife's name was Margaret.
By 1851 they would be living elsewhere in Northumberland possibly Ancroft, Windmill Hill, Norham etc. as they worked on the land (possibly tenant farmer) and moved around.
Many thanks to anyone who can help.
Rob

Hi,

Do you know of any children that may have been living with them at the time? And where Margaret was born?

There is a George Atkinson, aged 54, brn Cornhill (is that near Wooler?) a farm labourer

Wife Margaret aged 53, brn Scotland, with 5 children.

They are at Cheswick Northumberland.

If you think its them ill give you more details.

Hi Susan and Michael,
I think you are both spot on with your information.
George probably was born in Cornhill.  My information came from the Crookham Presbyterian Church records which gives us a baptism place  and the phrase "of Avering (Yeavering).  Crookham is about 4 kilometres from Cornhill on Tweed. Yeavering is possibly where George originally came from or moved to and is not that far away.

Your information confirms that it is the right person.
Michael - You will remember my previous search relating to Peter Atkinson (1793) . I am now certain this is his brother. They are both listed as sons of Thomas  Aitkinson in the Crookham information together with other siblings. You will recall that they moved to Horncliffe Mill near Norham where Peter's first two children were born. Peter (1793) and George(1797) are also listed in the Parson & White Norham Parish Directory as the Millers at Horncliffe. They were also witnesses at each others marriage in Norham. They seemed to work together and move around together. Peter moved to Ancroft Mill by 1841 and I think George was in Belford in1841 and then the Mill at Cheswick shortly after. Cheswick Buildings is 1.5 kilometres from Ancroft Mill and Windmill Hill is the same distance from Cheswick. Peter (1793) and George (1797) and their wives are all buried at Ancroft. At one point George lived at Berryburn which is some 500 metres from Ancroft Mill. He combined working in the Mill with farmwork.
Easington Demesne is about 2 kilometres from where Peter's son's wife was born! All the information fits into a pattern with dates and places and timescales spot on.

Thank you both for your efforts. Another piece in the jigsaw and I'll sleep better tonight.   I see you are still busy Michael helping others with your breadth of knowledge.  A good Northumbrian.
Rob

 Rob,

Just a snippet on "places".....

Although the 1851 census for George's "Where Born" has Cornhill recorded, enumerators were instructed to record " place of Birth" or " Parish of Birth"

Although into 1800s Cornhill was an independant parish, it was not an
" ancient" parish.

Originally within the Parish of Norham, a "chapel of ease" was built at Cornhill to serve the growing pop. at the western end of Norham Parish. Then ( I don't know date) Cornhill Chapelry gained it's independence from mother parish Norham.

So the recording of "Cornhill" for George could have meant the village of Cornhill or the wider area of Cornhill chapelry/parish.

Yeavering was both a community and one of the sixteen "townships" that made up the Parish of Kirknewton.

Hope this does not hinder !

Michael,
Thanks for this and I see your point. However I have some further background which I'll PM you with later ( bit busy at the moment)  which goes someway to explaining the situation more fully.

Susan,
Thanks again for your quick response - much appreciated.

Looking at my original post and the wording in the record I have more closely I think I was wrong in assuming that George was born in Yeavering. He could just as easily been born in Cornhill.
