Esther Tattersall - Pre-1881 - Rochdale - Please
« on: Thursday 11 February 10 05:01 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Going over a section of the tree I haven't looked at in ages, I seem to have left something that doesn't add up.

It all stems to the 1891 census and the TAYLOR family. They live at 38 Crown Point, Norden, Spotland and there is the head ROBERT TAYLOR who was born abt1848 in Bury and his wife Sarah Alice who was born abt1850 in Spotland, Rochdale.

They have children:

Annie - b.1884, Bury
Fred - b.1886, Bury
Bertha - b.1889, Spotland

Then there is ESTHER TATTERSALL who is listed as grandmother and is born in 1818 in Spotland

I'm guessing this is Robert's grandmother. I do have a little on the Grandparents of Sarah Alice and nothing brings up Tattersall.

However the glaring thing is regardless who's grandmother it is - how can this Esther be such, when she would be lucky to be married by the mid 1830's. How can she then have a child old enough to be the parent of Robert or Sarah Alice?

I figure taking this lady back might throw up some answers. I found her very quick on 1881 census:

Living with husband James Tattersall who is a year older. They live at the dwelling Folly in Rochdale. He is a Ag Labourer.

If it helps in the search, there is a Hannah and daughter Alice Tattersall four doors down at Spring Bank, Rochdale. Hannah was born in Barrow, is 53 years old and is an Annuitant. Alice is 36 and was born in Spotland and is Interest in Money.

Also five doors in the other direction there is a James Tattersall who aged 23 is living also at Folly, Rochdale - He is a Loom Jobber, Unmarried and a Boarder of the Hamer family.

If anyone can help take Esther back, I would be very grateful

Thankyou

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

It looks possible that Esther Tattersall could be Robert Taylors mother:

1861 census
Sheffield, Spotland
RG9/3041 folio 37 page17

Esther TAYLOR, Head, Widow, 42, Housekeeper, Rochdale
James, Son, U, 23, Bleacher, Rochdale
Mary, Dau, U, 19, Throstle Piecer, Rochdale
Elizabeth, Daur, U. 17, Cotton Slubber, Rochdale
ROBERT, Son, U, 14, Cotton Weaver, Rochdale
Thomas Crabtree, Son in Law, Mar, 22, Cotton Warper, Rochdale
Alice Crabtree, Daur, M, 21, Cotton Weaver, Rochdale
Alfred Crabtree, Grand Son, 7 months, Rochdale

There is a marriage of an Esther Taylor to James Tattersall in 1863 at Rochdale Register Office or Register Office attended - see www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

Regards,
Mo

Hello,

Sorry for the late reply...

This looks like great news. I mean it would make sense, I said all along that Esther could not be old enough to either Robert or Sarah Alice's Grandmother.

While I get all this onto my tree, I couldn't be a pain and ask if she can be found before she was widowed in 1841 or 1851?

Thankyou both for your help and your time.

Jonathan

UPDATE

Its amazing what you take down and put away. I see in 1871, Robert was living at 2 Minorca Street, Norden, Spotland with his Grandmother Mary Lee, 74 a widow born in Rochdale.

That doesn't mean Esther ain't his mother. Its not too far removed for him to leave home when his mother's remarried in '63.

Begs the question is Mary Lee, Esther's mother or Robert's as yet unknown father's mother???
