There is a marriage for Ora Stanley Vail, clockmaker of Montreal s/o Henry Hird Vail and Judith Thomas to Claudia Snell of Westmont d/o James Snell and Janet W(?)allis on
6 July 1918 Montreal (Anglican Saint Martin)
ancestry interprets Clauda's name as Sweet but her signature looks like Snell.

Is this the family you're looking for?

Yes, I think that you have found the right person. The Claudia Snell, nee Cooper, had a daughter in London in 1910. This daughter's Declaration of Passage to Canada, SS. Melita, March 6th 1924 to Canada gives the Mrs Ora Vail as her Mother and the passenger, a Winnie Snell is going to Canada from Southampton to join her parents. The name 'Cooper' comes from Winnies 1910 Birth Certificate  as` her mother's maiden name.
Please keep digging for me.

I've attached a scan of Claudia's mother's maiden name from her marriage registration as my interpretation of the last name is probably wrong.  Perhaps Harris?
If that's the case it might tie in with the family in Plymouth Devon in 1901 with father James Snell and mother Jane with daughter Claudia born 1886 Roche Cornwall.  The same family is living in St. Austell registration district in 1891 where a marriage is registered in Jun 1876 between Jane Harris and James Snell. St. Austell 5c 167.

That doesn't explain the Cooper maiden name from the birth registration.  I know this topic has been on this board previously and I can't recall what the results were but I do think you were pointed to this family in Devon as a possibility.

If Winnie was illegitimate Claudia might have taken license with the birth registration and altered certain facts to her advantage.  The marriage record from Quebec also indicates her father was James Snell not Cooper.

If you want to look at the marriage record yourself send me a private message with your email and I will send you the link.

The 14th entry on this link is for Claudia Snell sailing from Liverpool on 21 Sept 1912 on the Teutonic and arriving Montreal 28 Sept 1912.  Born 1886 Eng. going to Montreal.

I cannot thank you enough for all the info you have given me.
I should like to know if there was any issue from the marriage between Claudia and Ora Vail, as if there was, these would be my late mother's half siblings.

This information might add to confusion.  In the Drouin records for the Catholic church in Brompton there is:

Ella May, adopted daughter of Ora Stanley Vail of Windsor Mills, farmer and of Alice Victoria his wife by her maiden name Moore, born on 5 Sept 19_5 (image of year below) at Sherbrooke and baptized on 24 Jan 1940 privately.  Entry signed by Ora S. and alice vail and Harriet and Harley Perkins.

I haven't found any death for Claudia nor a marriage for Alice Victoria Moore.
