Census in the army
« on: Friday 12 February 10 16:23 GMT (UK) »
Did the army take census' when stationed abroad? Excuse my ignorance.

I'm trying to find Private 1783 James Logan in the 1851 census & again as a Sergeant in the 1861 census.

He was with the 92nd Gordon Highlanders. According to a history of the regiment that I found on-line, they left Ireland on 5/3/1951 for the Ionian Islands. They were in India until 1863.

James was born in 1825 in Govan, Renfrewshire.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Magian

If they did only the 1911 one survives. During the late 18th and the 19th centuries, up to 1888-1898 depending upon the unit, they took a monthly muster roll, which have survived. They were sent to the War Office every three or six months. So in effect there was an going count of the number of men in the army. So you need to research the muster rolls in Kew.

They would have kept a depot in the UK. In 1860 it was in Sterling. btw..the army list of that year says the battalion left 3rd March 1851, or are you American?

Thanks for this - always learning something new.

I'm trying to find my relative in 1851 as that is when his son was born. I've asked if any kind person going to Kew would look him up for me at April 1851 and 1861.

No, not American, I'm from Edinburgh!
