John Conoty was originally posted to Blyth Haven from HMS Trident as a boatman on 14 Jun 1851.  He served there for just over a year and it was noted that he was "inclined to drink."

He was stationed at Seaham Harbour from Jun 1852 until 26 Feb 1858 when he was removed and promoted to Tynemouth.

You can trace his movements in ADM 175/7 at the TNA.  I'm afraid I don't know anything about his parents.

Thanks for that,

I didnt think there would be any takers,
I down loaded those file from the NA yesterday and found the three pages applying to him, didnt pick out the drink part, but I like that, as far as Im aware his father was a wine merchant,
I've put some feelers out about the Hms Trident on another forum, glad you confirmed that ship because I wasnt too sure.

thanks, How did you know about it?

Not quite sure which part you're asking about.  I have a coastguard on the family tree, which is why I looked at the file.

Glad you have already found the TNA info - the files are very useful.

hi there,

I figured it was a very unusual area,
and did not even expect a reply,  let alone so quick.
I have another coastguard in the family but have not found him on the ADM 175 files, although aint looked properly.
I did spot a rich miller Ill see if I can find my notes of which page he was on.

hes called;

Richard Miller
b isle of wight 1832
and was a coastguard in tynemouth in 1861
his son benjamine married john Conatys daughter selina conaty - my great great grandparents

John conatys wife was born in davenport and some of his kids were born there
then a couple are born in Sheerness and then one in seaham
so I think that shows his movements

Im going to investigate the tridents links with sheerness.

ps a friend of mine lives in the old coast guard cottage in weymouth, and he has an old rocket box he found in the loft.

Richard Miller is on the same folio as John at Tynemouth.  He was posted there from the revenue cutter "Mermaid" in 1854 but I can't read what is says after "subsequently...."

Richard would appear to have married on the Isle of Wight where two of his children were born (one of them Benjamin).  Then it was Weymouth.  Once in the North-East, the family seems to have stayed there: some of his grandchildren were born there.  Richard had become a lodge keepr at a chemical works by 1881.

Hi Barry

My ggggfather was also John Conaty, his son also John Edward Roxworthy Conaty was my gggfather.  Not sure how this works but I hope you will be able to contact me.   I have photos of some of the family and a lot of the family tree information.

I only stumbled upon this tonight and am a bit of a stranger to RootsChat.

Hopefully we will speak soon.

Linda
