Headstone markings
« on: Saturday 13 February 10 22:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I have just located my Gt Grandparents burial site and it has Large black polished headstone and vase ..As far as I am aware they have no connection to the Jewish faith, but there is a Star of David on both the headstone and vase . Does anyone know if the star is used on a headstone, to symbolise anything else besides the Jewish faith. I believe it was erected after death of my Gt. Grandfather in 1949..
Any help appreciated

Although you think you have no Jewish connection, it is possible there is.  I have been told that my ancestors may have been Jewish way way back, but have not been able to verify.
As the Star of David is so closely linked with the Jewish faith, I would think it most likely that there was some Jewish connection.  Was his mother Jewish or of Jewish descent.  This is a matriarchal religiion.

Was this burial in an area at anytime connected to a Jewish community?
Also if another family member only found out about this connection in or around 1949 it would make sense.

Have you contacted the office for the cemetary to see if they have anything in their records.  And also look all around the stone to see if a stonemason or undertaker is mentioned they also may be able to offer some help.

It does not necessarily have a Jewish meaning, it can represent God and heavenly wisdom.  It may have other meanings as well.

Thankyou for your replies .
I cannot find any Jewish connections to the family and all Marriages /Baptisms for as far back as 1765 have been in Church of England...
Burial site has or had now Jewish connections.. and no Stone mason name on the headstone or base..
I have asked within the family that are alive but no one knows why ,There is a small family stone mason opposite the graveyard so if I can catch them open I will go in and ask if they have any thoughts

It is a symbol used by the Masons as well as being representative of divine protection, so not necessarily Jewish.

Hi Ben
The Headstone is in Eccleshall Road Cemetery, Stafford ,Staffordshire...

Names George Hillman 1871-1949 and Emma Hillman (nee Nicklin) 1871-1934.

Would not think George was a Mason but I will try and find out
