Marriage of James Newton to Maria
« on: Saturday 13 February 10 23:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to find the marriage of James Newton of Somerby, Leicestershire to Maria who was from Casterton, Rutland. I am assuming that the marriage may have taken place in Rutland. It probably took place some time before Feb 1823 when a son William was born (my g-g-grandfather). I have no other information to go on than this. Maria is listed as born in Casterton on the 1851 census but at that stage living in Leicester.
If anyone knows where to look for me or point me in the right direction that would be great. I could not find any records for this marriage on IGI.
Many thanks

That period may not be not indexed for Casterton "aka Great Casterton"

You don't say when any other kids were born or give Maria's age.

Hi Pauline,
Thanks for the quick reply.
William the son of James Newton and Maria was baptised in the Independent Congregational Church in Feb 1823 in Kibworth Harcourt in Leicestershire. I am assuming that James was living there because of his work as a Carpenter and then after moved to Leicester city. From the 1841 to 1861 we can find James and Maria in Leicester with other children Thomas (born abt 1833), Maria (1836) and Elizabeth (1837) all born in Leicester.
Best estimate of birth year for James is 1792-1796 (born Somerby) and Maria 1797-1802 (Casterton). So I guess a marriage should have taken place between 1813 and 1822.
I have searched IGI for marriages James Newton to Maria and to Mary and found nothing that is close.
So to prove James' father and find Maria's family name it would be good to find their marriage. Any more ideas of how to move forward?
Thanks again
Gerry

Was Elizabeth's birth (1837) included in civil registration?

Hi Jerry,
Brides usually Marry in their own Parish.
Have you discounted this for any reason?

Marriage;
James NEWTON
Maria EAGLEFIELD
08 April 1822, Ryhall, Rutland, England

Their Daughter Elizabeth seems to have been christened Mary Elizabeth Newton.
All the christenings are on the same batch on the IGI.
Shame Elizabeth wasnt born a few months later and her birth would be reg.and you would have her Mothers name !.

It seems to me that a 10r gap between 1st and 2nd child is a little unusual though. Could he have married 2 Marias?

Trish :)

Hi Trish,
Thanks very much for your help. That does look to be the marriage, and it seems that Ryhall is very close to Great Casterton. Yes I did consider the brides parish as the likely parish but did not search Ryhall only Casterton.
Yes you are correct that the 10 year gap does seem to be long, but Maria does not seem to be a very common name at that time so perhaps is unlikely. William unfortunately seems to moved from the home before the other children were around.
But I will search for Maria's death to see if it is a possibility, but it does look like the mother of William is Maria Newton nee Eaglefield.
Thanks again
