Marriage certificate not signed
« on: Sunday 14 February 10 12:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have a marriage certificate via the GRO, that took place in1858 Manchester. It has not been signed by either the bride or Groom or the witnessess. They have not even left their mark. The space is totally empty.

Is this unusual, and what could be the reason.

And help please.

The GRO only has the copy of the certificate sent in with the quarterly returns. It could be whoever made the copy forgot to add the signatures. The original held by the local Register Office could have the signatures, as required by law.

dont forget that only the original Church or RO register has the actual signatures. everything else is copies made manually as the Register entry migrated up through the system to the GRO.

Some local Register Offices supply photocopies of the original register with the original handwriting. The GRO have no access to the originals.

OK,

Thanks for that.

Maybe it was just an oversite.

Cheers!
