Newport Market Army Training School in Westminster, London
« on: Sunday 14 February 10 12:43 GMT (UK) »
I have come across a distant relative who was at the Newport Army Training School on the 1911 census when he was 13. His father was a private in the Grenadier Guards when he married in 1895. Does anyone know anything about this institution?

Regards, Kentish Lass

There is a Newport Cadet Corps, Royal Field Artillery in the 1914 Army List. It was affliated to the 4th Welsh Ammunition Column, based in Newport, Monmouthshire.

Hello Kentish Lass,

It appears that the Newport Army Training School was situatred in Cobourg Row, Westminster and was formerly known as the Newport Market Refuge and Industrial School.

Hi K. L.
What dates were they involved please. I have a missing relative whose deceased father was a was  career Artilleryman and he may have been placed here at a place I haven't discovered before.

Hi
I have been going through some of the stuff in my attic. I am at this moment looking through an annual report of the newport market, it says 1926. I know the school moved from Greencoat Place Westminster to Darrick wood orpington around that time.

It appears my grandfather was perhaps at this school in 1901ish when he was 13.  The address on the census says 75 1/2 Cobourg Rd.  Im curious about this as the census before that showed him with his parents and a bunch of siblings and this sounds like a place for orphans or something.  Anyone have more info?

Hi,

Any more info anyone has on this institution would be very helpful. Does anyone know if there are any surviving registers anywhere?

My great grandfather was also there in 1901 - he was baptised aged 13 July 1901 with a number of other boys from the school at St Matthew Church, St Peter Street so if anyone has ancestors ther around that time, well worth searching for a baptism there - I assume they baptised all the boys when they joined the school. Certainly my great grandfather wasn't there for the 1901 census so I assume in July  1901 he was a recent arrival.
