i have a relation a thomas egan who on the 1901 census was in prison on portland dorset i would like to no how to find out what he was in prison for and why portland as he lived in bradford west yorkshire many thanks

yes he was the same man but again i do not no what he was in prison for and can find no source of information on either conviction he was my great grandfather so it would be great to find some info

There are a few on Ancestry's criminal registers but a year of birth would be very useful.

If we are talking about the Thomas Egan in jail in 1901- he was born circa 1872 in Bradford- according to the 1901 census entry. He is down as married and a general labourer.

The 1891 has him as age 20,single and a masons labourer,born Bradford.

thomas egan was born in bradford in 1871 i no quite a lot about him but what i dont no is how i can find out what he was in prison in armley on the 1891 census for and why on the 1901 census he was in prison on portland if any one can tell me how i can obtain that info  i would be most gratefull

Now we have a bit more info(date and place of birth) maybe someone knows where to look for sentencing info?
