Bolingbroke (and variants) in Colchester or Chelmsford 1821/31
« on: Sunday 14 February 10 18:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks, I would appreciate any help with this at all. I know at best all I will get is head of household and number of persons in the household, but at this point I will be happy for that. My best guess is that there are about 10 families split between the two cities. If this is not possible or feasible, I apologise for the inconvenience.

cheers,
g a r

Not sure what you are looking for, but there are quite a lot of families with this surname in Essex.
I just looked in the 1851 census; James 1822 born Chelmsford; wife Susanah 1822 Burnham; children James 1845;Susanah 1847;Eliza 1849;Mary 1851.-also Charles 1818 Colchester;Lawnear 1819 Col.;Lawnear 1840;S Jane 1844; C John 1849; G William 1851.
regards.

Parish Census Listings (Supplement), 1695 - 1840

A joint publication from Essex Record Office and
Essex Society for Family History

Colchester St James    1839     D/P 138/1/1

Harwich Road contd & North side of East Street

Bollenbroke   John & Ann   Children: 1 boy  2 girls        Gardener

Some other unclear meanings.  Religion?

This is the only Bollingbroke or similar in the Parish Census Listings series.

Same John & Ann found in 1841.   Harwich Rd    John 70,  Ann 65,  both b. Essex

Thank you both for your replies.

My thought was to identify individuals in specific locations so that if I was able to access online parish records, I could concentrate on those areas and idividuals rather than trawling all of Essex. Initial searches in 1841 and 1851 showed me that Colchester and Chelsmford were likely targets.

I suppose the NBI might be of some use in this way too as well as the early portions of civil registration.

I have been trying to find the family of Sarah Bolingbroke who married Richard Abbott in 1812 at Kelvedon near Colchester. He was a seedgrower so John Bollenbroke the gardner intrigues me. In 1841 there is a Henry Bollingbroke, born 1828, staying with Richard Abbott. My thought was that this was Richard's nephew.

anyway, the search goes on  :)

Dear GAR,

Re your Bolingbroke enquiry, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the famous departmental store in Chelmsford, Bolingbroke & Wenleys , they closed relatively recently, five, perhaps 10 years ago...........................part of your search perhaps ??

Hi Boblima - it's funny how some things escape one. I think someone mentioned that on another thread what seems like an eon ago. Thank you for reminding me of that.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to link the two Bolingbrokes I have to each other or any families at all.

cheers,

Hey g a r,

Follow up the Bolingbroke store thread, who knows, you might be a long lost heir to the Bolingbroke fortune !! ( if indeed such a thing exists )

It was a sad day in my opinion when Bolingbroke and Wenleys closed their departmental store in Chelmsford,  I have spent many a happy afternoon browsing, in fact I last bought items from there some 4 or 5 years ago, there seems to be no other store locally like that family run business, nothing to do with FT business. There are still family members around I understand
