Crematorium Contact
« on: Monday 15 February 10 09:28 GMT (UK) »
I've found the death of a friends grandfather in St Marylebone. The death certificate says he was cremated. Is there any way I could contact the local crematorium to find out any details?

He was a mysterious man and nothing is known about him for at least 30 years before his death so I would like to find out a bit more about his life somehow.

I've found the death of a friends grandfather in St Marylebone. The death certificate says he was cremated.

I've never seen that on a death certificate before. All I can think of is the informant being the person "causing the burial or cremation".

Which column was the information in?

St Marylebone comes under Westminster (although this hasn't always been the case) so you should contact the Cemeteries Department of Westminster City Council.

He died in Luxborough Lodge Home for the Elderly. I think the informant was a member of staff because under his name it  says causing the body to be cremated so he obviously authorised the cremation.

I always thought that you needed two MD signatures for a cremation?

I will email the address you gave me and see if they can help me with this mysterious man.

Thank you for  your help.

Thank you so much. As I don't live near London and am don't know my way round where the records are kept I am walking on uncharted territory at the moment so any information is gratefully received.

Hi Margaret

The registers for cemeteries/crematoria in Westminster are kept at Hanwell.

The St Marylebone Cemetery, renamed East Finchley, has the crematorium for the area.

http://www.westminster.gov.uk/services/communityandliving/burials/

The web site isn't as good as it could be for providing information.

They don't have an email address so you'll have to phone.

Let us know how you get on for the benefit of other chatters who find your topic in the future.

I will do Dawn I've been a genealogist for over 30 years and I am still learning from so many people because I keep hitting these brickwalls.

I can't thank people enough for all their support and I always try and reciprocate when I can.

I will let you know if I find anything.

Dawn I had another look at the Westminster Archives website and there is an email contact section(not an open email address) it's just above the map that gives direction to the Archive.

I've sent them an email and hopefully they will get back to me over the next few days.

I've had dealings with St Marylebone crematorium in the past and my enquiry was forwarded to Hanwell Cemetery ~

The cemetery manager was very helpful in my case, so I hope you get just as lucky.
