Hi Geoff,

I have Moons a plenty!  Possible connection?  . George Moon and Margaret Stewart - Duncan Moon and Isobel Gow- Alexander Moon and Elizabeth Irons. Next in line for me is Thomas Moon and Elspeth Cochrane. Only Mackie in Longforgan I have is James Mackie who married Isobel Moon 29/03/1807
Haven't got any Forbes though and as there are families of Moons in Blair Atholl who all seem to have used the same christian names....
Just joined roots chat yesterday and posted a message re Moons in Blair Atholl - you might like to take a look

Hi Gealach,

Your Thomas s/o Alexander & Elizabeth is the older brother of my Henry Moon 1807-1884.
Henry married Janet Kidd CRICHTON 1834 at Abdie, Fife.

Their first 3 children were born in Scotland. In 1839 they sailed to Australia & had 4 more children.
Their 1st born Margaret married William CRICHTON in Tumut,NSW,Australia.
William was born in Alyth, Perthshire and was known to the Moon's in Scotland. He worked for Henry as a miller out here & in Scotland as well I think.

Henry's wife, Janet & William CRICHTON were cousins.
I will send you a Personal message.

Cheers
Geoff

Hi Geoff

So, two brothers, Henry and Alexander went to the same area in Australia.

My Thomas only got as far as Fowlis Easter. A lovely village about 5 miles from Longforgan and about 3 miles from Dundee. He was the village blacksmith. He married Elspeth Cochrane in Liff and Benvie in 1829. They had 8 children - some born in Liff - others in Fowlis Easter. Thomas died 1877 in Birkhill Feus and Elspeth died 1884 Doune Kilmadock.

Hi

One of my Gt,Gt,Gt, Grandmothers was called Christian (Christin) Moon (1800-1868) from Blair Atholl. Her Father was Donald Moon and her mother was a Setton (Seaton).

Christian married (1826) Alexander Logie from Little Dunkeld (small village outside of  Dunkeld)
They eventually moved to the Village of Errol, which is only a few miles SE of Inchture.

One of the Gt grandaughters of the above lady was named Christina Moon Logie in her memory. This lady married Hugh Lawrie. She lived and died in Errol.

Hi

I forgot to mention that there are Mackie names in the Inchture churchyard. Inchture is a village a few miles south of Longforgan.

The names are:
William Spalding Mackie

Seaton was also a popular surname (aka Seton or Setton)

Hi You guys,

I'm new, still finding my way round the site.

I am a direct line of the Blair Atoll Moons. Using the census records on Scotlands people I have recognised some of the names you have been documenting The earliest Moon I can find is George, and then a line of 3 or 4 Duncans. My grandfather was born in Inverness 1901/2 his name was Alexander, his father was Duncan Moon who moved from Blair Atoll to Inverness to become a book keeper/accountant, that's where I traced the line back through several duncan's mostly Blacksmiths up the line to George. My two uncles are both living in England and are both still Moon's
Not sure where I will go from here. There seems to be more than one family of Moons back in the Atoll which can make things very tricky. I always cross check all the documents I have acquired from Deaths/Births and census. so I am pretty sure the line I have followed is correct.

Hope to here from someone soon

Kind regards Moonster ;D

Dear Geoff

One of my great grand uncles, John Gourlay, married Jane Forbes b1831 in Blair Athol, at Blair Athol in 1860. As far as I know she was not related to all the Forbes mentioned below.

One of my paternal great grandmothers was Elizabeth Murray Forbes, but she came from Longforgan. She is descended from Adam Forbes b c1710. He came from Dowally and those descending from him were born Dowally, Logierait and Longforgan, in the main.

regards
John Gourlay
