Robert Mauchlen and Jane Drysdale a 20 year gap.

Hello

My first time post on the Ireland boards on behalf on my sister and husband.

The family name I’m searching for is MacLean (from Scotland, who have been based in  Lancashire for about 100 years).  However, family lore has it that this family was originally called Mauchline/Mauchlen/Mauchlin and came from Ireland.  (where, we’ve no idea).

What we have as fact is that a Robert Mauchlen (variously a druggist asst / or chemist) – father – George Mauchlen (Master Builder), mother Isabella McDougall - married a Jane Drysdale on 19 June 1873 in Tradestown, Glasgow.

They had at least the following children

1.   George Mauchlen – my brother in laws direct ancestor? b.  30 Sep 1873, Central District     Glasgow  (Scotlands People)
2.   Robert Drysdale Mauchlen b.  22 Apr 1877, Antrim, Antrim, Ireland. (IGI)
3.   John Mauchlen b. 13 Apr 1880, Belfast, Antrim  (IGI)

The family do not appear to be in the 1881/1891 census for Scotland or England?

The next record of this family appears to be the death of ‘Robert Mauchlin’ (Chemists Apprentice), aged 18 years on 14 June 1895 in St Giles, Edinburgh.  Informant Robert Mauchlin (father) – 8 Summer Street, 1 Carlisle)


Then, on  a free search of the 1901 census (in Lancashire) we have only
Robert Mauchlen age 53 born Scotland  (wife Jane dies in 1900)
Isabella Mauchlen, 18, b 1883, Ireland
Romeo Mauchlen,  21, b. 1880, Ireland
Elspeth O Mauchlen, 16, b. 1885, Ireland
Basil W Mauchlen, 14, b.1887, Ireland
Marshall J Mauchlen, 12, b.1889, Lancashire (free bmd has him born as 1888)
Rowena J Mauchlen, 9, b. 1892, Lancashire  (free bmd has her born as 1890)

George MacLean – my brother in laws grandfather, married Sarah Lilian Woodrow on 11 Jan 1898 in St Pancreas London.  We have the family forward from then.  I’ve posted a previous query and received a response on

What we’re looking for is further evidence/confirmation, that George MacLean is the George Mauchlen born in Glasgow 1873.  (my sister is awaiting the death cert for George, who died in 1926 in Lancashire which she’s sent away for, which we hope will confirm the name change)

From the Irish side we’re looking to find out where we can find any info relating the children born there and if there are any surviving records or the ‘81/1 census records with the family on it.  (e.g. there can't have been too many Basil Wilberforce Mauchlens born anywhere).

22 Apr 1877 Robert Drysdale Mauchlen born Antrim
13 Apr 1880 John Mauchlen born Belfast, Co.Antrim

Parents are listed as Robert Mauchlen and Jane Drysdale.

        A search on the Record Search Pilot site of www.familysearch.org gives the following children all born in Belfast.
Robert 1877
Romeo Apr-Jun 1879
John Apr -Jun 1880
Isabella Jul-Sep 1882
Elspeth Jan-Mar 1884
Basil Wilberforce Apr-Jun 1886

The registration details are on the site will allow you to order birth certs.

Unfortunately there are no 1881/1891 census records- first complete census is 1901.

I don't have anything to add to your search and to the information below unfortunately because I came up blank on George Mauchlen born 30 Sep 1873 in my own search and just assumed he died as a child when the family moved to Antrim and before they moved to Lancashire. If your family is related to him somehow then we are very distantly connected through his grandmother Isabella McDougall.
I do have a bit more on the other children though if you want to compare notes.
