Well he's a Woofer alright!

Interestingly they seemed to be armed with the heap of junk known as a Ross rifle. A Canadian weapon that went through 85 variants in an attempt to get it adopted by the War Office! The British army tested and spurned the weapon betwixt 1910/12, but due to shortages for the New Armies, some were pressed into service in Oct 1915.

The Canadians who went to war with them in 1914 dumped them in favour of battlefield SMLE's. By 1915, they were using their own SMLE's They were a good target/snipers rifle (and when fitted with a telescopic sight, a very good target rifle), but unsuited to modern warfare.

The Home Guard were issued with an amount in 1940...

So, we have a pic of one of the Woofers New Army bns in Oct 1915 ;D

He was a lovely old boy, with a wicked twinkle in his eye. He lost both his legs to gangreen at the age of 80.
