If it aint a gun why is the place where canons are put on a war ship called the gun deck?
I never heard of a son of canon, but I heard of a son of a gun!

A gun:

A weapon consisting of a metal tube from which a projectile is fired at high velocity into a relatively flat trajectory.

Simple.

Think our viking heritage is showing  ;D

gunnr = war (Scandinavian)
gun = heavy piece of ordinance, cannon, portable firearm

and here's the origins of the gundeck:

gun wale or gunnel =  at the top of the side of boat; topmost planking of a wooden vessel.

a wale = a thick plank forming a ridge along the side of a wooden ship
