Can some answer this question please.
« on: Wednesday 17 February 10 18:51 GMT (UK) »
My Grandfather died 8th June 1915 during world war one, he is buried in the British Cemetery at Cabaret-Rouge ( think that is in France).
My question is Does his death have to be registered in his homeland (Dundee Scotland) as I would dearly love record of his death.

Thank you in advance Joanie.

War Returns are amongst the minor records on Scotlands People, so the record may well be there. If you register on SP you can search free though you have to buy credits to actually view the records.

Have you looked him up on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website? Records I've found there included rather a nice certificate, though I don't know if they all do.

The WW1 records listed in the Minor Records consist of a list showing :-

Column 1 - Regimental Number
Column 2 - Rank
Column 3 - Name (surname First)
Column 4 - Age
Column 5 - Country of Birth
Column 6 - Date of Death
Column 7 - Place of Death (often just a country "France or Belgium" listed)
Column 8 - Cause of death

Unfortunately it does not show the "normal" details from a death record.

Hi Isabel & Falkyrn
Thank you both for your info. I already have a print out with the details of his death from CWGC , Have also been on SP searching for a death certificate with no luck, this leads me to think my Granmother did not have to register his death as he had died in France. Once again thank you both for your help.
Joanie.

I don't believe that relatives reported war dead. Given the format in which they are recorded it looks more like an official return possibly from the War Office.

I have just found a Roll of Honour image and obituary for my ancestor, who died in France. It was reported in the local newspaper 1916 Liverpool about 2/3 months after his death.
Maybe you can discover similar tributes in a newspaper in Dundee. Good luck. ;)

Hi Jcksnj930,

Have you checked here http://twgpp.org/search.php

or here http://www.britishwargraves.co.uk/index.htm (Cabaret Rouge is listed) to see if you can get a picture of his headstone/name on a memorial?

Have you tried contacting the War Graves Commission?
You could also try www.gro.gov.uk

Service deaths abroad in WWI were registered as Overseas Armed Forces Deaths by the Army (or appropriate service) and they would have issued the certificate.  These tend to be rather vague, eg cause of death = killed in action, place of death = France.

There is a separate GRO index for Overseas Armed Forces Deaths, and you can order copy certificates from the GRO.  But don't expect a lot of detail, they are fairly generic.  (I don't think his being Scottish would make any difference, as it would just come under British Armed Forces.)
