"aulk buildings" anyone heard of this property ?
« on: Wednesday 17 February 10 22:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Bit of daft question maybe?  My ancestors were down as living in "aulk buildings" on 1911 census.  Has anyone ever heard of this ?  I wondered if it was possible that it is a type of building a poorhouse maybe.

Anyone heard of it before, it might just be the name of their house, but I thought it was worth an ask.  There residence was in Cannock Staffs.

Thanks Amanda

Hi Amanda,

Is there a street recorded that might help to pin down which area this building was in?

I've had a look at the 1911 census & "Aulk Buildings" have working men living in them with families. Can't see the name on the original census return, makes me wonder if it should be Ault which is a local name.
Goulds of Sheffield, Thursfields of Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Archers of Smisby, Ropes of Earsham/Eastwood, Hursts of Dukinfield/Stalybridge/Kingsbury, Andrew roller makers of Stalybridge/Dukinfield.

In 1787 Thomas Poynor's house in Great Wyrley was certified as a meeting place for Independents,  but no permanent place of worship was erected. In 1822 the house of Joseph Ault was certified as a Dissenter's meeting house.
