Thomas PROBERT
« on: Thursday 18 February 10 12:49 GMT (UK) »
I have only just learned that an ancestor Thomas Probert emigrated to Australia at end of the 19th century.  He was born in 1867 in Disserth, Radnorshire, Wales and spent part of his childhood in an Orphanage in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.  I don't know where he ended up - possibly Tasmania?  Any help you can give would be very much appreciated.

Hi Kate,

I think this may be your Thomas Probert.

Thomas Alfred Probert married Emily Alice Daymon
1/08/1898 at Evendale Tasmania.
Reg no.131/1898  RDG 37.

Thomas was aged 31 and Emily aged 25.

Two children born to Thomas and Emily.

John Thomas born 22/11/1898 at Evendale Tasmania.
Thomas Daymon born 26/08/1902 at Evandale Tasmania.
Could be more children but can`t see them at the moment.

Thomas Alfred Probert buried Cornelian Bay Cemetery Hobart.
Buried 21/09/1940.
Emily is buried with him also. :)
I can give you more details on the burial if you want.

By googling I found the following:

http://eheritage.statelibrary.tas.gov.au/
Headstone of Thomas Daymon PROBERT . Died in 1965 aged 62yrs

and (too late for the son but perhaps a grandson)
Headstone of John Thomas (Jack) PROBERT . Born in 1921, died in 1983.

Hi Kate,

Yes I found that the two children had moved to Gladstone in Tasmania. One I think had a wife named Annie. There is also a war record at the National Archives for one of the children but is yet to be veiwed.
Thomas Alfred Probert at the time of his death was living at 28 Charles Street in Moonah Tasmania so was his wife when she passed on. His wife died five weeks before he did.
The house is probably still there today. :) I can always go and have a look for you.I can also check for a headstone if you want.

Thank you very much for this info.  It looks like the correct Thomas (his father was also Thomas Alfred).  I've long wondered what became of him so it's nice to find out.
Is there any way of telling if he was a voluntary emigrant or was he transported for some crime or other?

Thanks again, Kate

Two years on and I have a few more questions.

A 1922 voters' roll showed a Gwendoline Maude Probert (a clerk) living with Thomas Probert and his wife, but I have no other trace of her. Who was she?

Also, when Thomas Alfred Probert died in 1940 his estate was divided equally between his son Thomas Daymon Probert and Charles Clarence Pitt, but I can find no relationship between Proberts and Pitts.  Who was he?

Any help gratefully received.

Kate
