NEIL family
« on: Friday 19 February 10 00:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone, I sure hope someone can help me......

I am just about tearing my hair out, and my head is going round and round. ;D

Hugh NEIL is my Great Great Grandfather, born Glasgow, Scotland abt. 1830.

On the 1841 census I can see him and his family

John, father 46
Mrs Neil mother 42
John, son 25
Thos, son 20
Robt, son 15
Mary, dau 5
Hugh, son 11
George, son 3
Frances, dau 1 mnth

Eliseo Murton 29 she was a polisher
Elizabeth Dunnan polisher

The family are all listed as born in Lanarkshire, and Father is listed as a bookseller.

According to Hugh's death cert Fathers full name is John Rodger NEIL and Mother's is Mary JOHNSON.

I have looked at later census records and to me it seems that the parents both die as in 1851, George is an orphan and Mary is a "destitute sewer" in the "Glasgow house of refuge for Females"

I would really love to know what happened to the rest of the children, and even if I'm on the right track, and also were there earlier children than John (jnr)

Kind regards,

Gail.

Could this be John and Mary at Glasgow in 1851? -

John Neill     51 Bookseller
Mary Neill    51
James Neill    18
Mary Neill    16
Frances Neill    10
Isabella Neill    4
41 Sth Albrin (should this be Albion) St

By 1851 it looks like Robert had married Mary and had a few children (sorry IGI down just now so can't check) and is living at Edinburgh.

Robt Neil  26 born Glasgow, Foreman Bookbinder
Mary Neil    28
John Neil    5
George H C Neil 4
Mary Neil    2
Robert Neil un 11mos

Looks like Thomas married a Jane who died and Thomas then moved to London. You'll be able to view his census records at Ancestry.

Regards,
Nel

Hi cookies4,

Yes you could be right! Thank you.

The census records that I have access to are throught the public library and it is the "Free library edition" I wonder if it is different? As when I looked for them all in the BDM bit it came up with nothing, I will have a look on the IGI and also free BDM.

Kind regards,

Gail.

Hi Gail

There are no Scottish entries on FreeBmd unfortunately, just covers English and Welsh records. Scottish BMDs are only available through www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, the official pay to view site for Scotland.

IGI is very good for Scotland and worthwhile checking for entries there first.

Regarding census transcripts, there is no difference between the library edition and the subscription service - maybe Nel had the magic touch  ;)

Hi Elise03,

Oh my gosh, you sure have made my day!  ;D

Reading back on my original post, some of that info is wrong, but I guess thats what  happened because I made assumptions!

I would be thrilled to have your info, and I would be very happy to share what I have (tho it isn't a lot)

Is it your Robert (and family) who sail on the "Norwood" in 1854? I found on Ancestry
Mary NEIL 36
John 9
George 7
Robert 2
It says they left England for Melbourne,

If you make two more posts we can then use the PM system to exchange e-mail address.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Regards,
Gail.

Hi Gail,

Thanks for replying.  :)

Yes, that's the family. Robert came out to Australia by himself in 1852 on the ship Aberfoyle then his wife Mary and their three children John, George Holmes Cooper and Robert, came out in 1854 on the ship the Norwood.
Robert came out to the Goldfields near Ballarat in Victoria to a place called Amphitheatre. It's where nearly all the Neils come from and they were one of the first pioneer families in the area.

Gail,

Robert Neil (brother of your Hugh) was born in 1825 in Glasgow. He married Mary Cooper in 1844. She was born in (approx)1823 in Ireland.
Robert died in 1900 in Geelong, Victoria and Mary died in 1885 in Collingwood (suburb of Melbourne).
They had 10 children, three of whom died before they immigrated to Australia.

Robert and Mary were married by a Methodist minister in Glasgow so i'm having a lot of trouble trying to locate any birth records.

Anyway, look forward to talking more and sharing the information I have.

Dear Gail,
I have just discovered your query, and am also interested in your family - for two reasons. I am a retired Methodist minister and am preparing a Register of all those who have served in the ministry of the Methodist Church in New Zealand, and Hugh had a brief stint as a Home Missionary. I am trying to make my entry as accurate as possible, and wonder whether you can help me.  Is Hugh's exact date of birth and of his marriage known - I just have a year for each.
It was helpful to discover the name of his mother - IGI give it as Mary Johnstone, not Johnson.
I try always to have the names and dates for the parents - do you know when John and Mary died. Any basic information on Hugh's career before and after the Home Mission year would be appreciated. If you would like to see the entry as it is so far I would be happy to send it to you.
On a more personal note I well remember William Andrew, and Les - who was a personal friend of my father's from WW1 days. I was interested to see that photograph.
