Burial John Coleman
« on: Saturday 20 February 10 19:14 GMT (UK) »
I need an opinion or knowledge of the area.  On the Bishop's Transcripts for Easington #101 of 554 is a burial of John Coleman.  Where was he from? I read as Renton, or Benton late of Haswell Moor.  Is it an 'R' or a 'B'?  Farther down the page on the last entry the person was from Raisbeck House and it looks like the same letter.

Is there a Benton in Co. Durham?  Is there a Renton or is that another spelling for Rainton?

Opinions?

I've had a look Janis & think it says Renton as the R is the same as Raisbeck, also 2 entries below is Ann Kay's burial, her mother's maiden name is Bainbridge, the R & B's are totally different.

But having just said all that on the previous page there's a marriage of a Christopher Bowman, but the B looks like an R  ???

Looking on 51 census on Ancestry there's a fair few people born at East & West Renton, so I think it's an old name for Rainton, or the way they pronounced it!

Cheers

Ralph Coltman married Elizabeth Hopper 31/1/1721 at Sunderland (IGI)

These children were baptised at Sunderland, interesting that they follow those to at HLS

Richard Coultman 16/4/1727

Frances Coultman 19/12/1729

John Coltman 21/5/1732 ** a late baptism or incorrect age on the burial record  ???

Ann Coultman 15/12/1734

Elizabeth Coltman 16/3/1737

Ralph Coltman 14/7/1739

I hadn't really thought of Coultman.  Thank you for your efforts.  Too bad my indexes of Sunderland don't go back that far.

The BT's don't go back that far either, tho I doubt they'd have the abode being so early.
