St Beghs RC School
« on: Monday 22 February 10 12:10 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have, or can point me in the direction of a picture of St Beghs Roman Catholic
school on Coach Road, Whitehaven?
I would love to have a picture, as my Grandmother attended back the 1920's.
I'm not sure but I think a new school has been built more recently, posssibly on the same site.
Thankyou......crossing my fingers!!

I've e-mailed a larger version of this photo to Alyson

The school's whereabouts can be estimated here http://tinyurl.com/yhpwej9

Thankyou so much Geoff-E
It is wonderful to see this, I wonder which window my Grandmother used to look aimlessly out of
which I'm sure she did!!
Kind regards

That was only part of the school Alyson.  There was another building the same size attached to it to the left of the photo.  And long huts used as classrooms below it to the right of the picture.

I remember running up and down each corridor with the school bell when it was my turn, at breaktime and lunchtime, before the electric bell.

These buildings were all demolished, and a lovely new school buit, all on one floor.

I know most schools had one, but we had a 'Grey lady' in the girl's toilets that scared the life out of us.

Happy days :)

Rosemary

Hi Rosemary

I took that photo in 1994 I think.  My Mum said there was a fence between the girls' part (of the school) and the boys' part.  Perhaps I just took a picture of the girls' bit.

The bricklayer who built our house extension here in Gloucestershire told me his mother used to attend St Begh's.  Small world.

That was before my days there Geoff :)
All our classes were mixed, although I think I would have preferred being in a class full of girls.
When I was there, each year group had a floor.  That part of the building on the left of your photo was the staff room upstairs, and I think the toilets and cloakroom downstairs used by each large building.
The hall where we all had dinner, assemblies and PE was next to the church, in a big building of its own.  The cookery classrooms were above it.
It was just a junior school when I was there, but not long before I started, it was juniors and seniors.  I spent my first year in the huts that were down below the big buildings.
You've got me all nostalgic now Alyson :)

Yes, Mum passed her School Certificate in 1936.

The gym/dining hall of which you spoke ... is that still there - the building next to the presbytery?

Looking at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/IndexMapPage2.aspx I think that was the old St Gregory's RC chapel.

Great to hear your stories of St Berghs Subaru, it really gives me a sense of what the school
was like........ Grey Lady and all!!
Do you think they had school photographs back then......... I wonder what are the earliest?
I think my nan leaft in 1931, as I think children leaft school at 14yrs back then, she went straight to
work at 'The Grand Hotel' in Whitehaven which from the pictures I have seen looked very impressive
before it burned down of course.
