McGills Castle Caulfield Donaghmore
« on: Monday 22 February 10 19:09 GMT (UK) »
Since finding my elusive grandmother Mary McGill who was staying with relatives in Drumreany in 1911 census, I have now managed to trace her grandparents in the 1901 census.  ;D
They were: John McGill born 1836 Tyrone and Mary Ann O'Hara born 1838 Tyrone. I guess they must have been born in the Donaghmore area as this is where the family were living in 1901-1911. They were Roman Catholics.

Could anyone help me with look-ups or suggest how I would be able to find the church records of their births or marriage please?

They had 5 children, 4 of whom I have found from the IGI, but James McGill my great grandfather is not listed; he may have been born in either 1864 or 1868.

Any information on this family would be so appreciated.

Amanda :)

Amanda,
I have found the record of three children born to John MAGILL and Mary Ann O'Hara, Catherine 1869, Mary 1872, and Owen 1875. They are listed as living in the Termonmaguirk area of Omagh and the church (possibly where the registration information came from) was Sixmilecross.

Thank you Kingskerswell

I had the dates of the three children's birth from the LDS IGI but I didn't realise they were born in Termonmaguirk and that Six Miles Cross was the name of the church  :o

Is the church still likely to be there? If not, where would the records be kept?

I must do some more searching on the Internet and learn more about the area.

Amanda,
I am afraid that I do not know the area but if they were Catholic and married before 1864 there will be no civil record but the church record, if it still exists, may be on microfilm at PRONI.

After a bit of Internet searching I have found St Michael's Church at the village of Six Miles Cross but it is Church of Ireland. I wonder where the nearest RC church would have been?

I will try Proni, at least I have a better idea of place names.
Must find out more about what they offer distant researchers and whether it would be worth a visit in the summer!  :) :) :)

Thanks Aghadowey.

Looking at Proni's catalogue, the RC church listed in Termonmaguirk (which I believe is in the SixMilesCross area) is at Carrickmore. Would this be the closest RC church to the village? If so, Proni hold the baptisms and marriage records on microfiche between 1834 and 1857.  :)

This is more than I can hope for; it may not hold the baptism records for the children but John McGill and Mary O'Hara may be listed  :)

Are there any other 19th century RC churches in the local area?
