World War I Army uniform identification
« on: Tuesday 23 February 10 10:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi, can anyone please identify the uniform in the hopefully attached picture.  I would like to know the Regiment.  The picture is of my maternal Grandfather, who fought in the 1914 - 1918 war.
Thanks, Diana

Can you scan the cap badge in more detail?

Clearly he had something to do with horses - spurs and the horseshoe on his sleeve but whether that signifies occupation or horse artillery/cavalry I don't know.

/edit
possibly Royal Field Artillery but cap badge is wrong, horseshoe may signify shoeing smith/farrier

Hi, have tried to scan the picture closer.  Hope this is a bit better, but it is getting distorted when I enlarge it any more.

If you are happy to put his name, DOB and place of birth someone might be able to find further details for you. If you have not already tried Ancestry.

Hi Dee,
My Grandfather's name is Thomas Edward Bonney, he was born in 1885 and married to Jessie Alice Evison in Paddington in 1907. He lived in West Ella Road, Harlesden, London. He died quite young at the age of 40 in 1925.  Hope this is enough info,

Regards,

Diana

Saw the title and thought I'd pop over from the Armed Forces board.
Based on the shape of the cap badge (although the detail is hard to make out) and the likeliest medal card I'd say Army Veterinary Corps.

Diana thats a wealth of information.  If there are any records for him then that will certainly be enough.

Thanks Neil1821 for the information and picture you sent.  It certainly looks like the correct badge.  Thanks also Dee, for your help too.

Diana

You are a very lucky lady.  Your grandfathers medal card AND his service history are on Ancestry.  If you will pm your address I will print them off and send them to you.  There are 25 pages of the service history!!!! Some may be duplicates though.
