New York In Shipley & Anyone Got old Maps
« on: Wednesday 24 February 10 18:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi, My Grt Grt Grt Grt Grandparents are recorded on the 1861 census in Shipley as living in New York.

I Don't mean New York America, The Census Actually refers to the Street Name as New York, There are However no house numbers.  I have checked the next few pages and a couple of previous ones, and it appears to be close to Saltaire Road, and Somewhere called Mout Pleasant.

Does anyone have any idea what the 'New York' area is called now,  and why there are no house numbers, was it a single building?  And does anyone have any maps of the area from that period.  thanks

It is not unusual for there to be no house numbers back in 1861
Often an address is just 'cottage' or not even that - just a list of households in a road or village

Can you give a name and ref so we can look at the image?

It looks very much like a road name doesnt it.

Clearly not a house name - it is dittoed for lots and lota of househoods over several pages.
Next street after it is Princess Street, so that may help a local pinpoint it.

If you look at the description of the enumeration district (click on District 3) it was on the route after 'north side of Saltaire Street' and before 'Princess Street'
