Toronoto Star's "Pages Of The Past"
« on: Wednesday 24 February 10 19:48 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I have been advised that there are some entries in the Toronto Star's "Pages Of The Past" which concern some of my ancestors of the Scott & Glencross families.
If anyone has access to these records, could they possibly help me please by telling me the information.
The entries are as follows :-
Nov 25, 1986, page B08
Jun 14, 1987, page A16
Jun 15, 1987, page C26

I live in England & am finding it difficult to research my Canadian ancestors & this is the first hopeful source of information so any help would be most gratefully appreciated.

Thank You,
Treefan.

Hi Tresfan,

I don't have a sub to the Toronto Star access this link http://pagesofthepast.ca/ but you may want to check out some libraries that archive the Toronto Star. I find the Toronto Public library an excellant resource and the librarians have been helpful to me. Their link is: http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/fin_art_index.jsp. Another resource are the many university libraries in Ontario that would likely have archived the Toronto Star as well. Queens University in Kinston is an example. Here is their link:
http://library.queensu.ca/research/databases/record/2765. The libraries would be likely free except for copying and postage costs.

Hope this helps,

Treefan,

I got down to the Central Reference Library this morning and looked at the Toronto Star on microfilm.  There's one hit (sort of) and one miss.

The Nov/86 obit is for a John Raymond (Jack) Scott married to Grace but the June/87 obit is for the brother of May Glencross:

GLENCROSS, Robert James - At his home on
Friday, June 12, 1987. Robert Glencross, beloved
son of the late Annie and Robert Glencross. Dear
brother of Annie (Mrs. J. Craig), Sadie (Mrs.
William Reid) and the late May W. Scott and his
brother Tommy Glencross. Resting at the Ingram
Funeral Home, 1055 Gerrard St. E. (at Jones Ave.)
on Sunday and Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral service on Tuesday at 1 p.m. Interment
Resthaven Memorial Gardens (Parking adjacent
to the funeral home).

I had searched only the 1984-88 Pages of the Past. I'll cast the net a bit wider and see what turns up. I might also contact the Mount Pleasant Group to see if the Scotts are resting in one of their cemeteries.

I searched for "william scott may glencross" in 1968-2000 and came up with a number of hits:

Apr 13, 1970 - page 32
Apr 13, 1971 - page 38
Apr 28, 1972 - page 44
Dec 28, 1979 - page C11
Apr 14, 1982 - page C15
Apr 15, 1982 - page D22
May 27, 1989 - page D08

I'll see if I can drop in to the Reference Library tomorrow to chase these down.

Mat, you really are a super star!  Thank you so much for your help. So, now I know that William was a widower by June of '87 if still alive himself.
I really do appreciate your help.

Hi Folks,

I was just thinking that the Globe & Mail may have some info as well, but I am not sure if they archive their newspapers as well. Not sure of their web addy either :-( When you are at library mat, perhaps you can take a quick look there too. I'm not sure which branch of the libraries your going to mat but  I hear the York branch is the best for genealogy. I have been to the Metro branch and that one is very good as well. Unfortunately I live a couple thousand kms away and only get to visit these places periodically. Again, hope this helps,

Treefan,

I looked up those leads yesterday (except 1972 - the reel was missing) and turned up nothing.  I've revised my Pages of the Past search to focus on May's obit by including her siblings, as identified in brother Robert's obit. That's given me another half dozen hits and I'll let you know what they reveal.

JDC:  The Globe website doesn't have anything like Pages of the Past so a search of the Globe would have to be manual.  I've been going to the Central Reference Library on Yonge north of Bloor and it's been quite good. Have also been to the library at the North York Centre but it's a bit out of my way.

Mat, I really would be lost without you!!
This is the first time that I have come across having to find out about ancestors in Canada & here in England it seems to be a very limited source so I was completely at a loss until your very kind help.
Thank you.
