Hi Mat,

I am glad that you have taken the time to go to the metro library for trefan. It's great that you are finding info at the Metro. I know some places can be a bit out of the way. I'm in Sioux Lookout so mosy of my research is done online and when I go to Toronto and other I try to go to as many places as I can with the time restraints I have at the time. My next trip to Toronto i'm intending to include the United Church Archives eand the Archives of Ontario :-)

Anyway, I hope you can find some info fo treefan with the new findings you have found,

cheers,

Treefan,

Today I found the obits for May's parents:

From the June 11, 1957, edition of the Toronto Star:

GLENCROSS, Annie - At her home
73 Boultbee Ave on Monday, June 10,
1957. Annie Smith, beloved wife of
Robert J. Glencross and dear mother of
Ann (Mrs. J. Craig), May (Mrs. W.
Scott), Robert, Sadie (Mrs. W. Reid)
and the late Thomas Glencross. Rest-
ing at the Ingram Funeral Home (1055
Gerrard St. E. at Jones Ave.) for
service on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Inter-
ment Resthaven Memorial gardens.

From the July 2, 1959, edition:

GLENCROSS, Robert James - At his
home 73 Boultbee Ave., on Wednes-
day, July 1, 1959. Robert James Glen-
cross, beloved husband of the late
Annie Smith Glencross and dear
father of Annie (Mrs. J. Craig), May
(Mrs. W. Scott), Robert and Sadie
(Mrs. W. Reid). Resting at the Ingram
funeral home, 1055 Gerrard St. E.
(at Jones) for service on Saturday,
at 10 a.m. Interment Resthaven
Memorial Gardens.

Unfortunately, as was typical of the times, the obits don't list grandchildren. Interesting that Robert and Annie lived on Boultbee, too. I found Robert listed there in the city directories back to at least 1915.

I don't think I can get any further with Pages of the Past. I'll contact Resthaven to see if the Scotts are resting there.

JDC: I live in central Toronto so it's easy for me to drop in to the Central Ref Library. I used to go to the Archives of Ontario on my lunch hour when it was downtown but haven't been to the new site out at York University yet.

Mat, that's terrific findings, thank you so much.
I know I've said it before but I would never have known about these details without your very kind help so I really can't thank you enough.
Treefan.

I heard from Resthaven today. They have 12(!) William Scotts but none has a wife named May. I'll give the Mount Pleasant Group a call next.

Treefan,

Glad to help out.  You'll like this. I was going to call the Mount Pleasant Group then I thought I’d give Pages of the Past one more go.  Knowing that William’s middle initial was “D”, I searched on “Scott, William David” on spec. That turned up only one hit but it was a good one.  This In Memoriam appeared in the Oct 10, 1984, edition of The Star:

SCOTT, William David – In
loving memory of a dear hus-
band, father and grandfather who
passed away October 10, 1982.
...
Sadly missed, your loving wife
May, daughter Ann and grand
children, Constance and Ian.

So it looks like May outlived her husband and remained at the Boultbee house which stayed in his name in the city directories until 1985-86.

The Oct 11, 1982, edition of The Star has this obit:

SCOTT, William – (Member of
Queen City Masonic Lodge). On
Sunday, October 10, 1982 at
Wellesley Hospital. Bill will be
sadly missed by his loving wife
May, his beloved daughter Ann,
his dear grandchildren
Constance and Ian and by his
brother George of St. Catha-
rines. Friends will be received
at the “Gerrard Chapel” of the
Ingram Funeral Home, 1055
Gerrard St. E. (at Jones Ave.)
on Monday and Tuesday from
2-4 and 6-9. Funeral service on
Wendesday [sic] October 13, at 1
p.m. Interment Resthaven Me-
morial Gardens.

I checked the city directories for St. Catharines and found a number of George Scotts in 1981. Only one was a retiree and I'd bet he’s your man. George R. Scott and wife Ann (or Annie) are listed at 101 Grass Avenue for close to 50 years.  He was a welder with “McKinnon Col Chain” / “Columbus McKinnon Ltd”.  They last appear in the 2000 directory.  I looked for other Scotts at 101 Grass and found Carolyn A., a hairdresser at “Frank’s Bty Salon”, in the 1966 and 1967 directories.

The next step is to make a visit to Resthaven and hope I can pull May’s death date from a headstone. Keep your fingers crossed that her obit will provide her daughter's married name.

My pleasure. As I've said before elsewhere, I'm just passing on favours I've received from others who have helped me through this website. I have ready access to these resources and it's a shame not to make use of them. On top of that, it's a challenge and it's fun.  ;D
