Frederick Hague 1822
« on: Wednesday 24 February 10 19:49 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for information regarding the early life of my 3 x great grandfather Frederick Hague.
He married Sarah Bagshaw - and i know pretty much most of it after his marriage  - but nothing before.
On all the census - i have found his birthplace being given as either Hayfield, New Mills or Glossop. Derbyshire.
His occupation was a Stone Mason.

In 1851 aged 26 - he was married - living in Whiston occ: Stone mason
In 1861 aged 36 - same again
In 1871 - aged 46 - he is found on the census living in Rotherham , and living in Whiston (got caught by the enumerators twice!!)
In 1881 - aged 56 - back in Whiston as a stone mason
He died in 1884.

My problem that i have after 18 years or so at this  -- is conflicting information:
1. on his marriage certificate to Sarah Bagshaw in 1844
he was 21 a stonemason - living in Haugh, Rotherham - Father Joseph (no occ given)

2. the only baptism ever found was Frederick Hague (haigh) son of Sophia Chr:19th August 1824 in Hayfield.

This is where i am stuck - can't go any further back.

Can anyone out there assist???
Regards
Betton

Hi Betton

It's probably occured to you too, but my immediate thought is that you've found the right baptism record and that Joseph Hague didn't actually exist - Frederick made him up to avoid embarrassment at the altar.

Hi Dave

Most Definitely!
But i can't find Sophia mentioned anywhere else - and i haven't had any luck finding either of them in 1841.

Hi,
Think this is your Frederick Hague on the 1841 Census
HO107/1327 Folio 50 Pg 13 Civil Parish Ecclesfield Yorkshire.
Owleston Hamlet of Wordsley.

Frederick Hague  1826  Apprentice  born Yorks.
He is living with Jonathan Proctor & family - Stone Mason.

In the 1841 Census Adult ages were rounded down by up to 4 years, so anyone aged between
15 - 19 is normally listed as aged 15.

In the Parish register of Hayfield, this is the only Haigh or Hague listed in either births or marriages.
It would be a good idea to look at the actual entry in the Parish Register to see if there are any
comments written by the Vicar, these comments are never transcribed by IGI.

Because he states born in Yorkshire, it is possible that he only ever remembered living in Yorkshire
and probably did not know until he married that he was illegitimate.

Thanks!
So this is now through your information what i now know.....  :)
Frederick Hague was living with Jonathon and Jemima Proctor in 1841.. (and you have given me the right one !!)
Because.....

In 1844 when Frederick Hague married Sarah Bagshaw a Sarah Proctor  was the witness ( i presume this to be the 11year old Sarah Ann proctor in the 1841 census )

now i have questions in my head i just can't seem to find answers to
Can anyone help???

Seeing as i can't after years of research find any relatives of Frederick..
I wondered if there is some form of family connection to the proctors?

could it be through Jemima???
Or Sarah Ann???

or am i getting over excited and they could have been a "Surrogate Family"?

Many Thanks
Betton
