1911 census - missing pages?
« on: Thursday 25 February 10 09:22 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know if there are a lot of pages missing from the 1911 census? I can't find two different families anywhere even though one of them lived in the same house for 40 years. The other was a transient so could be anywhere in the country.

All of the original household pages have survived, but some of the Enumerators’ Summary books (RG78s) - relating to the following counties and registration sub-districts - are missing from the archives:

Thanks Stan

I wonder if it's an error with the translation of the names I'll have to work on it.

Perhaps an address search will get you the right result, if the names have been mistranscribed in the index?

I don't think so.  However, the search engine is notoriously poor, so the main rule is "less is more" i.e. only enter the minimum to start with i.e. name and DOB (no middle names), and if you get too many matches, narrow it down by adding more data (i.e. place of birth or place of residence).  If you get stuck, try searching for known spouses or children.

I've tried everything from a surname search through to adding his DOB + or - 10 years and still can't find him. As he was a transient I've looked all over the country but he doesn't seem to be around anywhere.

I've had instances where the search engine has not found the person I'm looking for, but when I've done a search on the address on the 1901 census, the person is still there, transcribed correctly.   I am a subscriber to FindMyPast, but I find their search engine is somewhat lacking, to say the least.  Have you tried searching by address ?

I would agree with Nick that FindMyPast's search engine leaves a lot to be desired but if I have problems I use the 1911 web site advanced search and more often than not find them there  :)
