Samuel Wilson- Leeds area
« on: Thursday 25 February 10 14:06 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I have just started researching my family history and would appreciate some advice.
I have been trying to find my great-grandfather Samuel Wilson but I'm now stuck.
My grandfather Arthur Wilson (born 1873 Leeds) married Louisa Coates in Hunslet in 1898. I sent for the marriage certificate and Arthur's father is given as Samuel Wilson (deceased)- profession, Painter. The address given for Arthur is 20 Scotland Place but I think he must have been a lodger or visitor there, as this is the address of the Crosland family in the 1891 & 1901 census.

In the 1881 census, the only likely Arthur Wilson I can find, lives with his widowed mother Margaret and her father John Thompson. Free BMD shows a Margaret Thompson married a Samuel Wilson in 1872 in Leeds so that could well be them. Is there anything I can do, other than send for the marriage certificate or Arthur's birth certificate?

Many thanks
Sue

I think the best thing would be to get your grandfathers birth cert.
That will confirm his parents, including mothers maiden name, and will therefore ensure you dont go off on the wrong track.
The marriage cert will then give names and occupations for Margaret and Samuel's fathers which will help pinppint them further back, esp as surnames Wilson and Thompson are not exactly unique!
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Thanks for your suggestions- I'll try getting Arthur's birth certificate first.
