Sarah Gregory
« on: Saturday 27 February 10 11:56 GMT (UK) »
Sarah Gregory was born in Marlborough, Wiltshire, England in 1869. In 1894 in Pimlico London she gave birth to William Gregory. No father's name appears on birth cert. William was brought up by Sarah's brother Thomas and his wife Mary Jane.
Sarah then disappears, no entry for her on 1901 census.
Family myth is that the father was named either Caffrey or McCaffrey and he was possibly a Canadian.  After much searching I found a marriage cert for Sarah and Henry Caffrey in Carleton County Ottawa on 25 may 1913. Both shown as born in England. Parents names for Sarah confirm that this is the Sarah I am looking for.
Canadian census for 1911 (2yrs before marriage date) shows 5 people named Caffrey living in Carleton County. Henry, Sarah and 3 children aged 7,4 and 2. This must be the same Sarah.
How can I find out: when she left England, did she go directly to Canada and which ship did she travel on?
Can anyone help?  Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

So far I haven't found their arrival in Canada.  On the 1911 census it shows that Henry, Sarah and daughter Doris(7) were all born in England and emigrated in 1904.  Children Edith (4) and Edgar (2) were born in Ontario.

There is a birth registered for William Henry John Caffrey s/o Henry Caffrey and Sarah Gregory.  William was born March 22, 1905 Hungerford township Hastings County.  The birth was registered by his mother April 29, 1905 and the notation is that the baby died 3 days after birth.  The same child was registered under Wm Henry John Caffrey in Sheffield Township Lennox and Addington County on 27 March 1905 with no notation of death.

There is a late birth registration for Thomas Edgar Caffrey born July 20, 1906 Hungerford Township Hastings county.  He is the s/o Henry William Caffrey and Sarah Gregory.  Henry was a Section Man at the time of his birth.  The late birth registration was sworn as accurate by the father Henry William Caffrey of 2385 Royal St. Montreal Quebec on Oct 28, 1940.

The death of Sarah is recorded in United Church Main Memorial records (Montreal) found in the Drouin records
On the 8th day of May 1937 Sarah Gregory of the City of Montreal, wife of Henry Caffrey, died in Montreal at the age of 68 and was buried in Hawthorndale(?) Cemetery onthe 10 May in the presence of Henry and Edgar Caffrey.

There is also the marriage of Doris Esperance Caffery at 17 years 11 months d/o Henry Caffrey and Sarah Gregory to James Turcott, widower, 23, b. Hungerford Township on
3 Feb 1921 at St. ? Catholic Church Tweed, Ontario.
The place of birth for Doris is Wolverhampton.

I looked for a birth for Doris in FreeBMD and a marriage for Sarah there as well and so far I haven't found anything.  Sarah might have emigrated under the surname Caffrey.

Hy Caffrey(27), Sarah(25) and Doris (infant) travelled on the Parisian from Liverpool to Montreal arriving 16 July 1904.  The county they came from in England was Josport and they were bound for Tweed, Ontario.

Some Ontario cemeteries can be searched from this site.

There is an entry for St. Carthagh's Roman Catholic Cemetery Tweed, Ontario - This is the church that Doris married in that I couldn't decipher

In that churchyard there is a burial for Doris Hespin Caffery but not for James Turcott.

This is a pay site but it does contain some references to Doris Hespin (Caffery) Turcotte.  Looks like her dates are 1904 and 1980??

There is a possibility for Sarah Gregory on the 1901 census in Brentford Twickenham Middlesex
RG13 1189 113 27

Sarah shows a birth of 1873 Marlborough, Wiltshire and working as a Nurse Domestic for George Robert Jenner.  Also in the same household working as a Cook is Jennie Gregory (25) also born Marlborough Wiltshire.  Sarah did have a younger sister Jane perhaps the Jennie in 1901.

Henry Caffery joining the Canadian Expeditionary Forces showing a birth in Gosport which coincides with the ships record which I mistakenly interpreted as Josport.

1891 British census for Portsea Hampshire has a Henry Caffery b. 1878 Gosport living in the Portsea island Union Workhouse

1881 British census for Alverstoke Hampshire shows a Henry William Caffery (2) b. Alverstoke Hampshire and Jane Caffery(31) b. Alverstoke Hampshire - she's married, housemaid but they are both residents of the House of Industry in Alverstoke.  Also there is a Frederick Laws(14) b. Alverstoke and Henry's marriage record showed his mother as Jane Laws.

Something to follow up on and see if there is a relation.
