Leslie Lumsden
« on: Sunday 28 February 10 05:45 GMT (UK) »
I have a letter from a 2x great uncle name of Leslie Lumsden sailing from Cork to Bombay on the Tulloch Castle (ship).  Dates of journey are dept 20 Jan, arr 2 June 1849.  I am trying to find out whether he was a crew member, passenger or possibly even a soldier In 64th Foot.

I would appreciate any help
Thank you

How old was he at the time the letter was written?

have you found him in the 1841 census?  what was his occupation then?

this ship appears to have an interesting past:
(extract from an Australian mag)

Desertions to the gold fields from all walks of life strained the colonies ability to even function as an entity. The master of one ship whose crew had deserted to seek their fortunes inserted the following advertisement in Melbourne newspapers.

"SHIP TULLOCH CASTLE

If any of the crew of the above ship, except William Mitchell, will return to their duty, no proceedings will be taken against them, and they will receive the current rate of wages for the run to Bombay. Apply on board, or at the office of James Henty, 11 Little Collins Street, west. 3167 WM. MURRAY Master."
It is not recorded if any of the crew returned, but it is unlikely.

the FIBIs website has  alisting of passengers arriving in Bombay on the Tulloch castle and lumsden is not listed. this suggests he could have been crew.:

(put Tulloch castle in search on this page)

Thank you both for replying to my email.  I wish that I had found this website earlier as everyone is so helpful.  I can't find leslie Lumsden for sure in the 1841 census but his brother was a rope and sailmaker and in view of the info from www.fibis. I think it more likely that he was part of the crew.  I hope if he did jump ship in Melbourne, he made his fortune!

Many thanks again for your help and info
Regards
