Baptisms at Rastrick
« on: Sunday 28 February 10 11:17 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know if the baptisms at Rastrick have been transcribed and if they are available for purchase?

I have a John Mitchell who gave his age as 52 in the 1851 census and Rastrick as his place of birth; so he was born in 1798/9.

He does not appear in the baptisms at Elland, either as Mitchel or Mitchell. In fact there does not seem to be any baptisms of a John Mitchell at Elland between 1777 and 1809 which appears unlikely to me.

If it is correct then I presume I should be looking at Rastrick and not Elland.

Hi
This is a link to the Calderdale FHS baptism publications, but it doesn't look as though they have transcribed the Rastrick ones for the dates you require.

The PRs are available at WYAS Wakefield.

Hope this helps,

Rastrick Baptisms are on the IGI - Batch no. C107833

There is just one Mitchell couple shown having children baptised 1795-1806 - a John and Mary:

Sarah bp.28/6/1795
Joseph bp.20/11/1796
George bp.24/8/1800
Sarah bp.20/3/1803
Mary bp.13/7/1806

On the face of it one would presume he must have belonged to them although there is no John listed unfortunately.   A John bc.1798 would fit in nicely, especially with that being father's name.

Thank you both.

I have seen the baptisms on the IGI but didn't realise they were the only Mitchell family being baptised there. I suppose it is a leap of faith to assume John is also their child.

I think I shall have to go to Wakefield for a week's holiday as all my brick walls seem to be there!

I have been away for a couple of days but I have now looked at the IGI Batch Number and the Joseph baptised on 20 Nov 1796 was the son of John Mitchel and Elizabeth, not Mary.

Have I missed something somewhere?
