Tim
Id go look up the Batley News from date of reported death up to about Feb 1919 you should get something..if he was missing you will hopefully get a few lines in the paper stating that..Ive had lads in the Spen Guardian missing in for example Sept 1916 then been declared dead  after about  a year later!
Even though the war ended less than a month after he went missing the papers still carried obituaries, photos etc well into 1919.
Also check the In Memoriam columns for the first few  years on the anniversary of deaths its amazing how much family history can be gleaned from those columns
Hes not on my list of Spen Valley(although its slightly out of area) POWs
that i have to hand ..this includes a few that died in captivity.

The cemetery he is in was an "open" one so his body could have been moved there after hostilities.Maybe CWGC still have some info on file?

Hi Tim

With three quarters of a million dead bodies they did not move them far. He is likely to have died in a field hospital in the rear.

Hi

This info passed thanks to Roger in Batley ;)
Bit of a mystery why hes buried there if he was POW? could he have died on way home? maybe worth contacting CWGC for any info?

Roll of Honour, Batley Library.
Stead, Joseph
Pte   39693
9th Bn  KOYLI
30, married and 3 children.
DOW in captivity 19/10/1918 entitled to V,B.
Some sources suggest missing, presumed KIA(erroneously).
Emp: Gardener to late Geo Hirst, White Lee Grange.
Res: 1, Pearson Street, Upper Commercial Street Batley.
Captured 27/5/1918 held at Freidrichfeld.

From the Batley News 28 September there is a very dark picture of him and also a short story of him sending a letter home from the camp or hospital.

From the Batley Reporter 1 August 1919 in the death notices is his obituary.

If you visit the Town Hall in Batley ask to visit the 1st floor.Just outside the Mayors Parlour is the WW1 Roll of Honour 1914-1918 Joseph is listed in fact there area a number of Steads on the Roll.

Hello   -  I also research the STEAD family and would like to know if your Joseph Stead is connected to my ancestors.  I have found that he married Harriet Ann, father was John Edwin Stead (if I remember correctly) and he died 19 Oct 1918 in France from Heart Disease.  I also have John and Edwin Steads in my tree and would like to know the ancestral path of Joseph if you could assist me.  Many thanks,

Hi, CecillyQ

I do not know if they are/were related. My Great Grandfather was born and raised in Batley in West Yorkshire.
