Brookes in Witney
« on: Sunday 20 March 05 11:06 GMT (UK) »
Looking for any information on Charles Brookes, listed on the 1830 Pigot's directory for Witney, Oxfordshire as an 'ironmonger and gunsmith', address: Market Place, Witney.

I cannot as yet place him or any family on either the 1851 or 1861 census so would greatly appreciate any help - parish entries for his marriage or death would be fantastic!

I believe Charles had a daughter Ann, born circa 1817 in Banbury.

Thanks

Hi

have found a burial in Witney 1836 June 7th for Charles Brookes aged 60 - could this be your man?

I had a look through the marriages 1837-1851 but could not spot any giving Charles as the father

Do you have any other info on his family?

Hi Debbie - thanks for the information.

I believe Charles Brookes was the father of Ann, born circa 1817 in Banbury, and who married Thomas Pinfold in 1849 in Banbury.
However, she had previously been married to someone surnamed Belton, and had 2 sons by him I believe.

Ann Pinfold was listed on the 1851 census as a school mistress.

I don't know much else about Ann Brookes, other than that her father was called Charles, but as the Pinfold family were blacksmiths I guess there is a good chance that she met Thomas through her fathers business as an ironmonger.

Thanks again for searching the Witney records for me - I will make a note of the 1836 death date for Charles

Regards, Julie
