Edward BLINKHORN
« on: Monday 01 March 10 06:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Trying to track an Edward Blinkhorn [born 1823 in Bolton Lancashire].
He arrived in Melbourne in 1853 on board the "Anne Dashwood"
He arrived in Hobart on the 27th September 1855.
Six or so weeks later he set off to Launceston.
He did some work around Table Cape.

That's all I've got, except a rough indication that he may have settled in Queenstown.

Any help would be much appreciated..

Hi Doug
Are you looking for information only after he arrived in OZ?
He was in partnership with his brother and step brothers as Joiners and builders employing 23 men in the 1851 census. I wonder if he left because of dissension in the ranks.

A little interesting info

Cando
That is brilliant Cando.
William, the recipient of the letters is William Birch, Edward's step brother. Mary Birch married Thomas Blinkhorn father of Edward. In the 1841 census they are all entered as Blinkhorns but in 1851 Mary is a widow and William and Thomas are Birch, Edward, Ellis and SarahElizabeth are Blinkhorn. I would say  it was Edward's father who started the business. Edward and William were apprentices with him 1841.
I had looked to see if he returned to England at any time but haven't found anything as yet.
Now to read the letters properly.

Don't you think the death in 1874 in Tasmania should be considered?  It is the only BLINKHAM on the indexes which may indicate that the name has been mistranscribed.

Doug

The link to the letters written by Edward were written from Launceston dated 13 Sep 1855 so it would appear your date of arrival in Hobart in a little out.

Hi

Thanks for the invaluable information.

I took the dates from the letters - they made some very interesting reading.

That death in 1874 could, quite likely, be Edward, given the number of mistranscription I've come across with the surname Blinkhorn. Also it indicates he was born in 1823 which fits.

The footnote at the end of the letters indicates descendants around Queenstown so I guess I'll now have to start hunting for marriage details.

Thanks again

Doug wildcard searches did not bring up any marriage for Edward in Tasmania.  There are only two BLINKHORN female marriages on the indexes before 1899 and if I recall, both well before the arrival of Edward.  Well check later when I get a moment.
