Townlands and other Irish land matters are explained in TYRONE MAPS & LAND RECORDS which is one of the resource threads stickied at the top of this board-

Hi,

For information about the period you are looking you would have to know the church the family attended and whether the church kept records at that time and if the records are still extant. It is well before civil registration started in Ireland.

Browne, Barrett -Co.Armagh

Thanks for you help.  Sorry I did not get back sooner as had a bit of a computer melt-down!  I have no idea which particular parish within Ballyfatten they were with - the only information I had was the one mention of Ballyfatton as Mary Ann Hanly's birth place in the census.  Guess it is a dead end for now.

A townland is a small part of a parish so you can tell they were living in the parish of Urney (which contains Ballyfatten).  Next you need to know which denomination the family were (i.e Roman Catholic, Church of Ireland, Presbyterian etc) - which I presume you know from the baptisms in Dublin and London - to see which church they would have attended.  Finally you can check out what records are available:-

PRONI in Belfast has the following baptism records for this parish

RC from 1866
CoI from 1807
Methodist from 1821
Presbyterian from 1837

Thanks.  They were Church of Ireland.  I have had a look at PRONI.   The main records seem to be C of I Castlederg or C of I Urney Christchurch so maybe I am making some progress.  Thanks for the help.

I just today found what I think is the marriage of Martha Hamilton and Michael Hanly in Urney December 1837.  Martha Hamilton youngest daughter of Charles Hamilton Ballyfatten House Strabane married Michael Hanly of Dublin.  So not only have I found the marriage I have also found the name of her father.  What a truly brilliant site the Rootsweb tyrone county one is.  Many thanks to those responsible.

Sarenid, I am new to this website so forgive....! My family (great x 8 grandfather) moved to Ireland in 1620 and bought/built Ballyfatton house. It was sold by Elizabeth Hamilton (now 94) a very few years ago. There is a lot of info on this family on the web and I hold quite a lot. Feel free to contact me at (*) and I would be very happy to share.

Hi colin
I think I have found a site re Hamiltons and Ballyfatton - Hamilton Memoirs.  I did try and email a CFBH at an email address on the site but the email bounced back so I assumed it was out of date.  Would love to get in touch.  Assume my martha is sister to margery, james and micah Carey would that be right.
