McLaughlin/Costello in Mullingar
« on: Tuesday 02 March 10 23:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi

My g.g.grandparents, Laurence Mclaughlin & Mary Costello (various spellings), married in Mullingar, Meath in 1844 (from IFHF), but no parents are listed. I was wondering if there is another way I can find out who their parents were?

I'm also looking for the marriage of Marcella Mclaughlin and Henry Barker (serving with the Army at Mullingar Barracks) in 1871, Mullingar. I have reference to it in a document, but I can't find any record online.

I'm stuck! Any help much appreciated.

Rgds, Penny

The details recorded in early registers can be very basic, so it's possible that father's names were not recorded (mother's names were rarely included). In all cases I've seen the IFHF records are complete transcripts of the original, but I have not seen any Westmeath details. It's possible, although I dont think the chances are good, that the original register has some more details. The way to check this is to look at the appropriate records in either the National Library (Catholic) or Representative Church Body Library (Church of Ireland)

these look like the details of the marriage of Henry from the Civil BMD Index :

 Name: Henry Barker
 Registration district: Mullingar
 Record type: Marriage
 Year: 1871
 Volume: 18 / Page: 275

You can order a cert from the GRO using these details - see Ordering Certs from GRO Roscommon

I dont see a cross-match for Marcella at the moment, but will have another look..

Thanks, Shane.

That's about what I thought about Laurence and Mary. I'll just have to keep looking for clues.

I didn't know that civil records for Ireland were online. What a discovery!! I have plenty of other Irish relatives to search for :-)

Marcella was also known as Maggie and once (on Henry's service record) as Margaret. So I did a search for both. I've found a Margaret M'Loughlin, 1871, Mullingar with the same volume and page numbers. I'm assuming that's a good sign?

Is there more info (parents names) on the certificate than recorded on Civil BMD's? If so, I'm off to buy a certificate.

Thanks so much, Shane. I've been stuck on this for years. Fingers crossed it's the right record.

Rgds, Penny

Once the year (and quarter if there is one listed), registration district, volume & page are the same you have a likely match.

for the marriage cert - see this topic - Details included on Marriage Cert

Note - full BMD registration started in 1864 (non-catholic marriage registration commenced in 1845)

That's brilliant.

I have had 2 professional searches done on Henry's marriage in the past, neither of which found any likely matches, so I'm really hopeful this time. I transcribed some of the American records for Family Search. I'm glad someone else did the Irish ones I need :-)

I'll put a note on this thread to let you know what happens.

I'm so grateful for your help, Shane.

a possible cross match for the marriage - could Marcella's real name have been Margaret ?

 Name: Margaret M'Loughlin
 Registration district: Mullingar
 Record type: Marriage
 quarter and year: 1871
 Volume: 18 /  Page: 275

The RC church records for Mullingar were not fully transcribed - the transcribers often omitted sponsors/witnesses/parents names. I had a problem with several incomplete records from Mullingar that I discovered were incomplete when I looked at th originals in National Library. There is now a message to that effect on the IFHF site under "Sources " & Mullingar. If your ancestors were RC (and maybe even if they weren't) it would be worth looking at the originals.
