LAST Family, Thorpe Hall, Horham
« on: Friday 05 March 10 10:45 GMT (UK) »
Would like to identify Mrs Last, whom my family visited circa 1943 at Thorpe Hall, Horham. Apparently widowed and senior citizen. Possibly from Dennington, Suffolk.

Do you have a Christian name and approximate age?  If so, we may be able to find her marriage, and then working backwards find her on a census.

I have a Local History Recorder in the parish of Horham who might be able to help, or know of someone who can help further.

If no luck from the amazing Rootschatters, I will PM the information  ;D

Hi, I was amazed to find a mention of Thorpe Hall, Horham, by chance, as my Mother, who is 86, remembers as a child visiting her relation (great) Uncle Caleb and she believes, his two spinster sisters, who lived there with him.  I would be interested to know your connection or relation to them @fafner?

There is a LAST one name study, and a Parham one place study by the same person. There are so many Lasts in this area of Suffolk  ::)

In the early to mid 19th Century Thomas & Rebecca Bayles (nee Moore) were living at Thorpe Hall.
Thomas Bayles was the son of John & Rachel Bayles (nee Foster) from Wilby, Suffolk.
Thomas & Rebecca had five children (three of whom pre-deceased their parents) all of the children married into local farming families. viz, Bolton, Cracknell, Jennings, Moore, Potter & Wilson.
(for the record there were many inter-marriages involving these families over the years)
The Bolton family also married into the local Horham families of Cossey, Roe, Bagshaw & Watling)
Thomas Bayles died in 1856 and the family moved left the hall.
In the 19th century Thorpe Hall was a manor within the Kerrison Estate.

"A Supplement to the Suffolk Traveller" by Augustine Page  - a detailed history of the hall can be found at
https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=TP8HAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA398&lpg=PA398&dq=thorpe+hall,+horham&source=bl&ots=0LgAmWdkU8&sig=fn4LzMpEK_5BKW8TFX_EfuikCks&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjW2q64nsXKAhUBeQ8KHfVCBP84FBDoAQgvMAQ#v=onepage&q=thorpe%20hall%2C%20horham&f=false

A modern photograph of the house & grounds  can be found at https://www.flickr.com/photos/john_fielding/17137179000

For the record Thorpe Hall was usually recorded as being within Horham by Kelly's Directory but situated within Hoxne by the Census and postal authorities
