Emily Brown - b.c1889 Pennsylvania
« on: Sunday 20 March 05 18:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have a section of my family who went over to the US and then came back again.  I was wondering if anyone could look them up to see what they were doing there?

My G Grandmother Emily Brown was born in Pennsylvania in approximately 1889...the family appear to have been in America between 1886 & 1891 judging by the England census returns and the birthplace of the children either side of Emily.

This is how the family looked on the 1891 census

Charles Brown, Head, 34, Coal Miner, Yorks Guisboro
Sarah Brown, Wife, 32, Cumberland
Eliza Jane Brown, Daughter, 11, Scholar, Durham New Seaham
Nath Brown, Son, 7, Scholar, Durham New Seaham
David Brown, Son, 4, Scholar, Durham New Seaham
Emily Brown, Daughter, 2, Pennsylvania USA
William C Brown, Son, 3 days, Durham New Seaham

RG12/4112 Pg 1 & 2
6 Doctors St, New Seaham

Would the appear on the 1890 US census?  Where would I find out about Emily's birth?  Is there anyone who can help?! I'm just after all information I can lay my hands on...!

Thanks,

Regards, Emma ;)

Sorry to say but the 1890 Census was destroyed in a fire or flood and there is no census for that time period.

I have no idea either!  Really I want to find out as much as possible about my Brown (sorry about that!) family from May 1888 when they sailed and while they were in the US.  Also when Charles Brown was in the US earlier than that, as he was according to the Passenger list you sent me!

Maybe the reason Charles had been here before -  was to check out the mines!

Pennsylvania liked the English and Welsh miners !

Hi Emma
I have been looking everywhere I can think of to try and find Charles on a previous trip - I just can't find him -  the closest I can get is -  one man who keeps showing up --  so I guess I'd better mention him !

CH Brown
age 29
arrived Penn PA
8th February 1884
Male
departure Liverpool
Ship British Princess
birthplace England

Doesn't look right to me - but sometimes the one you reject turns out to be the right one - and he kept turning up !!!
Were you able to find them on 1881 census ?

I don't know if you noticed but on the manifest I sent  - a couple people under your family -  was a man named John Brown aged 23 salesman going to Philadelphia - just thought I'd mention it..! could be family !!
Did you say you already had the 1871 census with Charles at 14 years old and a coal miner already ?..... boy! they started young ......... I bet he'd already been working a couple of years...

http://www.iarelative.com/mines.htm

This is a pretty good site and I like the photo -  who knows maybe one of those guys is a relative .......

I'll just keep looking Emma  - when you least expect -  that's when the miracle happens.........!!!!!!!!
