Looks like he may have married his first wife's relation, sister/ daughter/ niece ?

Thomas Groom married Sept qtr 1881 St.Geo Hanover Square Ann Maria Gould possible bride?

Death Chelsea Mar qtr 1887 Ann Maria Groom aged 63

Perhaps both brothers married older women and moved in to their homes?

Jane Gould is one of the 3 lodgers with Thomas in the 1891 I found.
So if he married his dead wife's sister it was at this time against the law.
 Act was repelled in 1907.

Wow!!!

I have been away for a few days, & returned to find all your messages .... BRILLIANT!!!! Thank you all so much ... so much to be mulling over!!

Looking over what you have unearthed, I am certain that the Thomas Groom born in Sherrington is indeed the Thomas Groom I am looking for!

Very interested to learn about Joseph Groom, as didn't know anything about him or his family before.
Tazzie - if you can track Thomas Groom back to Sherrington in the 1861 census, that would be brilliant, as would unearth who his parents /siblings were.

Interested to learn about the GOULD family, too. I looked Ann Maria Gould's birth entry a few mins ago, which lists her as being registered in Hungerford in 1854. I also noticed a marriage entry for Charles Gould & Mary Smoker Bance for earlier that year, & was wondering if there was a link there. I guess the 1861 census would show Ann Maria living with her parents, but I do not have access to that.

Any further thoughts or discoveries would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks again!
James

PS. Looking up the death index for Ann Maria Groom, I seem to find her listed as Annie Maria Groom, and having died during 1889, at the age of 34. This date would tie in with the birth entry for the aforementioned Ann Maria Gould.

If she is Jane's sister she will have the same parents as Jane.
