Haynes Family - Ely St Marys
« on: Sunday 07 March 10 17:29 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am hoping to find someone who has access to the Parish Records for Ely St Marys.

I am trying to locate the parents or baptism record for Josiah Holmes Haynes b. Circa 1799.

I believe his parents to be Samuel Haynes and Elizabeth Holmes but this is second hand information and would like to be able to confirm it.

Census returns confirm Josiah was born in Ely and parish mentioned is St Marys.

I believe Josiah Haynes was one of 13 children and would be greatful for any information that can be found or provided to confirm the information I have been told.

Many thanks

NikW

Josiah Holmes Haynes baptised 22/4/1798 -Father Samuel;Mother Elizabeth ? at Ely St Mary.
He married Ann Hall on the 28/2/1819-he was classed as a minor and was married with the consent of his Father Samuel Haynes. Ann Hall was a widow of the parish of Ely and they were married by licence-witnesses to the marriage were William Topping and Susanna Pigott.

Thank you very very much.

In your opinion if Ann was a widow i assume that Hall would have been her married name?  It wouldnt say anywhere on those records what her maiden name would have been?

You're right. Ann would have remarried in her married name and her maiden name wouldn't have been mentioned.

Using the burial index on http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html the only burial in Ely that fits is that of James Hall age 22 in 1818 at Ely St Mary, who might have been her first husband

Paco - is there a marriage of a James Hall to Ann at around this time?

Thank you very much for your help.

Really appreciated.

hate to push my luck but a marriage for Samuel Haynes to Elizabeth Holmes c. 1798 would also be a huge help.

I am also to trying to confirm where Samuel Haynes was born,  there is a burial record for him in 1832 aged 56 but have not been able to locate any place of birth for him?

His age at death would make his birth c. 1776?

If I could ask to check for this aswell would be very much  appreciated.

There is a marriage for a Samuel Haynes and an Elizabeth Holme (without the S) in 1797 at Westminster Middlesex. Don't know if this is the one, but it is the only one I could find. There were several Samuel Haynes born around 1776, but without knowing where he was born it is difficult to know which is the one. Did they have a daughter called Keziah? If so it looks as if Elizabeth and Keziah are on the 1851 census in Cambridge. Elizabeth is in her eighties, and had been a schoolmistress. This Elizabeth was born in Peterborough with daughter Keziah born Ely.

I know samuel married elizabeth as Kezia is there daughter and as you say she appears on the census as being born in peterbrough.

I get Holmes from the fact sons Josiah and William are both Holmes Haynes.

I have come across the marriage in Piccadilly before but unsure as to why is she is from Peterbrough, they are married in London and end up in Ely?, the names and years fit but guess I will struggle to confirm this.

Any idea how i could find out where samuel was born? am i missing a trick?

Im wondering if a brother of Samuel who survives to the 1851 census might help confirm but again unsure how i may be able to establish a brother of Samuel.

Haynes' living in Ely born around years possibly to be a brother are listed as Ely born?

Is there a Samuel haynes of that year born in Ely? London?
