Jorose, I am absolutely overwhelmed by the information you have sent me. I am astounded that you have been able to direct me to this picture of a large part of his adult life. A lot of it made very sad reading, particularly that he was in a mental hospital and the comment was made that he would not get better. He seems to have sufferered a lot of ill health prior to that, particularly his suffering from the flu. He does seem to have had some 'attitude' when he was a young man - the exclamation marks at the end of some of his enlistment answers are interesting!

Andy, thank you for the link to the patient records. It does seem to be quite difficult to obtain copies of the records so I probably won't follow up on that.

Jellybeans, I would be interested in contacting the Lickiss people in Dubbo, it's often been spelt differently. I'll have to have a good think about how to word a letter as it doesn't look as though Hugh ever married, so I can't think what the relationship could be!
