Eek parish records
« on: Monday 08 March 10 16:00 GMT (UK) »
Dear All,

After using a certain well know website I seem to have got to the end of what I can find. I now need to find a parish record.

Help, I know the person I want to trace was born in Wakefield, he married at Thornhill parish in Flockton,

So I am thinking I need to look at the parish records. Now having watched a certain genealogist program it all look's so easy, but what is the process.

I am guessing that I need to find the parish records i.e. are they still at the parish or in the local council offices.

Then here come the questions:

Do I then need to book an appointment?

Can I search for more than one person?

Will it show the mother name as the Church of latter day saints shows no mother at present?

Will it show the original parish born?

Cheers everyone for answers already

You don't mention dates, but if it's a Wakefield baptism you're looking for then bear in mind that quite a lot of them are now available online at the pay site www.findmypast.co.uk. (See http://tinyurl.com/y9p8rtw for detailed information).

In my experience these records usually give both parents' names and their place of residence, plus sometimes the father's occupation and/or the child's date of birth.

I have just googled and found the following:

Should give you enough information to answer a few questions if you cannot find what you are looking for on Find my Past.

I've done research at the Kendal Record Office, and I didn't need to make an appointment.  The people there were really nice and really helpful.  I spent a few days looking at microfilms (a bit tedious!) and I also looked at some actual documents--some of which were really old.

If the IGI shows no mothers name and it is an extracted entry rather than a submitted entry then it is extremely unlikely that the parish registers show the mother.

Parish Registers are usually found in the county record office.

If you give us some dates then we can tell you with more certainty what you are likely to find.

Give the relevant record office a ring!

They all seem to have slightly different arrangements ("all" - well all 4 I've used!) Some will need you to book a microfiche reader in advance, some won't. Various types of ID are required; some issue day tickets; some issue longer term tickets which are accepted in other records offices --

what they all have in common though IME is helpful staff who really don't mind answering queries. No-one is going to expect you to walk in and immediately and intuitively understand their filing system! So don't worry!
